People keep spouting this and I've never disagreed more when it comes to something Shonen related.
Even if we're just talking fights the fact Deku has any sort of power let alone one that lets him punch shit into oblivion makes those fights less interesting.
Of course Deku still needs to spend his chapter out thinking the opponent but the end goal is just "beating" whatever gimmick the power has at which point Deku can just pull out his gun (aka punch them) and dissolve any sort of tension because he always has a gun on standby.
Shit as Deku learns how to better control his power it strays more and more from it being interesting as far as fights go because Deku won't even have the handicapped of breaking his fucking bones every time he attacks anymore.
One For All is the most vanilla of powers you can possibly get unless Deku "unlocks" some weird potential within it and his fights are less because of it. Had he got any other sort of seemingly useless power he'd have to actually go outside the box to use it and even if he had stayed quirkless at the very least he wouldn't have his fall back with the "I can just punch him hard" button. He'd have to actually continue to think out his plans like he already does but even more so.
Thematically it made sense for Deku to get a quirk but the specific quirk of One for All is shit.

The series is heavily inspired by classic Western comics, Deku being vanilla is the point. All Might is supposed to be THE quintessential hero, and the story is about Deku's journey to receiving that mantle. If you look at it like a sidekick-to-hero story, where instead of All Might you have some other irreplaceable comicbook icon like Supes or Cap, it becomes more interesting.

I don't dislike it but ever since Deku won to the cool hypnotic guy on the tournament I just felt like it was veering towards generic and as of that moment it only kept getting more and more uninteresting. There's some good shit here and there but the series focuses too much on Deku making stupid decisions and whatnot, the villians excluding Stain are incredibly boring in my opinion, Shigaraki is about as boring as they're trying to make him creepy and the others are even more awful. I think the biggest flaw the manga has is the characters, most of them just aren't very good, I think they're given a good development and the author tries to keep them on the spotlight and not just Deku but many of them are just fucking boring.

I think the best battle shonen ability is something along the lines of Stone Free, conceptual power that has a lot of room for creativity, while still having some clear limitations. But you could still write decent fights with One For All if they centered around the concept of Deku trying to think how many limbs can he afford to lose temporarily in order to fool his opponent and so forth. Scenes like Deku overpowering brainwashing is just bad writing.

I read Gash up to towards the end of Faudo where Kiyomaro comes back. I sorta grew to like Gash's design a little, when I hated it at first, but my biggest problem with it was that the spells were really,really bland.
Only Kyanchome's and Tio's spells seemed like any creativity was put into them while everyone else just got big,destructive spells that functioned in the exact same way.

I think Umagon's were only bad because they were against shitty fodder enemies and all of his spells functioned the same because they were transformation ones.
If the mangaka had a little more creativity it could have been a GOAT series. If Gash was swapped with Kyanchome as MC that would have been great.
