At this point it's safe to assume that a "kabenari" is a person who is infected with the Kabane virus but retains their humanity. Mumei is probably one and didn't get examined so they could keep this fact about her under wraps. Kabaneri may also have the iron around their hearts. MC's trick for overcoming the bite infection probably turned him into a Kabaneri. I'm guessing that he gets roped into protecting the train until they can get to safety along with Mumei because of his new condition. Hell, he probably realizes that he's not totally human any more in that scene where he gets shot by a Bushi in the episode two preview. He probably developed the iron around his heart and was able to shrug off the bullet wound.

Bait all you want, but I find this angle refreshing. I've seen a ton stories where you have an ancient order of warriors fighting an evil, and then some dude comes along and tries to come up with a more innovative, less costly means of protecting people, and suddenly they're the bad guys. (Fans of Ushio and Tora know what I'm talking about.) I like the idea that the person who sees the old-fashioned warriors' obsolete ways and tries to find a better solution is the hero of the story.
This isn't even half as good as the first episode of SnK. Anons will clamour to anything just to get attention.
