I really think it's great. I don't care how cliched twintailed tsundere was or has become, it works so well with her. Especially with her horn thingies being the Eva pilot things, which works perfectly with her desperate desire to let people know that she's an Eva pilot.
Also there is this whole contrast with Rei. Rei having short hair, blue hair and red eyes and is often linked to the moon while Asuka has long her, blue eyes, red hair and is linked to the sun. Plus Rei's struggle with her doll like behavior and free will and Asuka's hatred for anything that resembles dolls.
I know I didn't say anything new for anyone, since everything I said is blatantly obvious, but there isn't much talk about it. I know two contrasting characters isn't unique to Eva, but I don't know any other example where it's done so well and that in almost every aspect and yet it still feels so natural.

Rei doesn't struggle with doll-like behavior, Asuka does. Hence Asuka has the issue with the dolls, not Rei.
Here's another contrast, Rei is pursuing her own free will and the definition of herself, whilst ASuka is mindlessly slavering to one NERV made for her.

There's a fair bit of thematic irony as well, it's half-way mentioned but Rei doesn't strive for success or popularity. Yet she achieves just that, while Asuka who wanted that more than anything else, never gets it.
Asuka represents desire for success without the means of getting there by oneself.
Rei represents achieving success through sacrifice and hard work done by herself.
The other interesting bit is that Rei seems quiet, demure and submissive, but she's also the strongest of the two psychologically and mentally. While Asuka is boisterous, confrontational and aggressive, she's the weakest by far.
This is because Rei works hard to achieve practical goals, and as a person she's almost obsessed by defining herself and figuring out what she is, while Asuka is obsessed by defining herself through a standard set by her parental figures.
This leads to Rei fortifying her own will and persona, whilst Asuka lives a lie enacting a persona that isn't her own. This is why Asuka breaks down while Rei prevails in the end.

You're right, I should've phrased it differently. Rei struggles with being treated like a doll by people like Gendo, plus Asuka's accusations. In the end she shows everyone how wrong they were when she goes against Gendo and helps Shinji out of her own free will.
It is known that most of Asuka's behavior are a consequence of her self-hatred, so a lot of times when she accuses people of something it is because she dislikes and fears these traits being part of her own self. She knows she is being used by NERV as it is pretty evident in many cases, but if I had to guess what goes through her head it's that she doesn't want it to be true, while feeling powerless to actually do anything against it.
