It'll be the grimdark bait and switch for sure. It's been obvious since they started trying to stealth market it with the GuP military advisor guy angle. They can't just do straight whatever be it slice of life or even sci-fi, it always has to have some sort of "This is ain't your usual genre show" angle to it that's a clear take on some other successful formula or idea but painted as a reversal of it somehow. Madoka is probably the most obvious example, but take even Saekano, it's clearly a pretty straight harem comedy teen romance with sexy girls thing but it spends half it's time trying to convince you it's above all that by having the characters constant lampshade all the cliches. What's sad is it works in convincing people their shows are deconstructions cause the anime fanbase is willing to believe just about anything as long as enough marketing and names they recognize are thrown into the mix. I doubt it would work in most other mediums though.

I'm trying to think of the last Aniplex original that actually turned out kind of good and I have to go back to Madoka Magica in like 2011 which I never thought was a masterpiece, just a good 12 episode show. Since then they've pretty much all been crap cause they tend to chase demographics by mashing as many popular and marketable elements as they can together regardless of how much they clash and then just saying fuck it lets see what happens instead of focusing on actually putting on a good memorable TV show. I remember one of their producers once literally told Maruto that none of his story ideas really matter for Saekano as long as they had cute girls.

There is something fundamentally wrong with this, it makes lazy writers, but at the same time it's mostly not the base story itself which either makes or break a show, rather the presentation of it and where the story decides to go late in the show.

Sadly at least where Japan is concerned they're probably right. Anyway can't wait for this to get curiously more coverage, long articles and rave review acclimation from sites like Yaraon and ANN. In the case of the former they barely even try to hide that they're primarily a stealth marketing blog for Aniplex titles. The amount of articles that Kabeneri got and the length of them compared to other shit in particular is pretty retarded. Last season it was Grimgar, Erased and Gate getting premium articles and coverage while everything else just kind of got casual mentions besides KonaSuba which became more topical as the season went on.
