I feel like people ship in this series for the wrong reasons. It's not about which girl you like best. I don't even particularly like Iroha (Megu and Sensei are the best), but I love moe 8man, and she's the only one that brings it out. No, but Hachiman is doing that not because he wants to create space between the two of them. He is doing that so he can be rest assured that her feelings don't exist because he's helping her out.

No, just no. Volume 11 was about Hachiman's retreat from, then return to, the pursuit of a genuine relationship (and all the pain that could entail). The whole point of it is that he's surrounded for the first time in his life by romantic expectations from all sides, he doesn't know how handle it, he tries to make everyone happy, becoming like Hayama. But he's not happy about it, Haruno exposes it, and then when he sees what it is doing to Yukino specifically, he goes back to genuine, and separates himself decisively from Hayama.
"Creating space" is not the trajectory that Hachiman and Yukino are on. The entire story has them drawing ever closer together, and becoming better individuals in the process. Yukino overcoming her problem is something she has to do in order for that distance to become even smaller until eventually it's not present at all.
