This show is bad. As someone new to anime I can tell you without the bias of nostalgia that Trigun is utter shit and has no redeeming qualities. The first half is mostly aimless comedy.
It is the second half that becomes interesting. The mood of the show changes almost 180 degrees. As a whole it improves but it still has several mishaps.
Also there were Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star airing that yeat and had similar settings. And you had Rurouni Kenshin with similar protag.

But for real, as someone who's been watching anime for years but didn't watch trigun until recently (im not american so it never aired here, and it's been sitting on my backlog for forever), I thought it was about a 7/10. Great characters, good world building, really good "vibe"--it knows when to be light hearted and when to be serious. One of the only, and biggest faults I found with it was the ending. Or rather, how things began to fall apart as it got closer to the end, finishing off with a non-conclusion.Like vash just thinks knocking his brother out and waiting for him to wake up is going to change the fact that he literally wants to wipe out the human race? maybe im missing some subtext or something, but it just came of as the writers wanting to go with a "and they kept on going about their fun adventures" ending that really wasn't possible with where the story was headed.
While that seems like a pretty big pitfall, and admittedly it is, it didn't stop me from enjoying the show over all. It's a lot of fun.
Also even the worst parts about this show are better than the entire fucking second half of death note.
