admittedly this whole "game is actually in California" thing only really worked for the first, and maybe the second game.
The first game has very little overt Asian elements outside of Maya - other things, like Dee Vasquez's yakuza gang, can easily be seen as the visual equivalent of a gangster mob.
After the original trilogy it is honestly hard to stretch the series taking place in the west because it just got too damn Japanese.
