In terms of the Ash/Serena ship versus the Ash/Misty ship, the former is the most heavily pushed ship in the anime's history when the show generally shies away from romance, while the latter is still being clung to by desperate, delusional echo chamber dwellers and people who haven't watched the show or played the games since Pokémania.
If amourshipping (the Ash/Serena ship) goes canon, we'll see the last bastion of Pokéshippers (the Ash/Misty ship) finally stop pretending as though there's even a shadow of a chance (though really at this point they're clinging more to an artificial reef than a ship).
If amour doesn't go canon, then the writers will have basically ramped and armored this ship up for the past three years, even sinking all possible opposing ships, only to send it careening over a cliff like an unfinished roller coaster without nearly enough warning. For example, they try to claim that Serena has feelings for Clemont, when the two rarely ever interact, and when they do it's all friendly interactions. Neither one has shown any interest in the other, and it's rare for either of them to acknowledge the other's existence.
Think of them as NaruSaku fans, if you will, but with even LESS of a leg to stand on.

We've been over this in the /vp/ thread the last time. A far greater amount of people were watching Pokémon back in the 90s when the series was a huge phenomenon and everybody and their cousins were watching the anime and playing the games. You can go on ANY video about OS anime or OST and you will ALWAYS have "aaaah how nostalgic", "that brings back lots of memories". Humans are nostalgic creatures, and nostalgia is always interfering with actual judgement, especially since it clouds the mind, overemphasizing or twisting emotions. People bitch about "muh Gen 1" or "Pokémon was better before" but Gen 1 games are absolutely unplayable and objectively bad games on so many aspects (just go and ask /vp/ about it, you'll have a huge list of flaws).
If you want to go by popularity, I'll have you know that XY(&Z) is immensely popular and SatoSere is huge ship that gets around 3000 Tweets with episodes.

The thing about NaruSaku was that it at least had some logic to it. Naruto DID have a crush on Sakura and Sakura DID eventually warm to Naruto and start liking him.
SatoKasu involves a character that got written out 15 YEARS ago, has barely ever been mentioned since, and only had any logic to it back then because she was the only girl in the series at the time she was around. It's not comparable, it's more like if Naruto/Konohamaru shippers flipped their shit their pairing wasn't canonized.
