Say what you want but I read fate stay night during a period of severe depression. Shirou fighting unendingly against the impossible odds and winning in spite of the odds and the set backs was cathartic. In real life I'm swallowing pills to suppress the urge to kill myself, and I'm still around years later to witness this shit posting in person.
It's why I don't feel like the animation can compare the the vn. The feeling of breaking apart in mind and body, the descriptions of the head throbbing and vision getting blurry makes it feel like there is a real danger and a real chance of losing, and makes me want to root for him. It's much different to see him strain his face then pull out the Magic seord and win.
