What's with the sudden fantasy anime boom?
They are everywhere and completely dominated last season's sales.
And they dominate LN market meaning more and more anime adaptations will be appearing.
It's a welcome change after the 2000-2010 Great Fantasy Starvation.
There were always a few fantasy anime every season.
What's trending are the isekai ones, which are fantasy as well. So you probably mean that. Pic related isn't isekai though, doubt it'll be popular.

A lot of animation is advertisement for something else. Many of the most popular and beloved 80s cartoons were made purely to sell toys. At least with LN/Manga advertisements, they still try to sell the story itself. The story is still primary rather than secondary to the merchandise.

1) Gamification and transfer can be fine, just look at 12 kingdoms. It didn't have levels and exp but the world structure was full of game-like abstractions and restrictions. Same for Horizon, though I haven't read the prequel supposedly explaining the apocalypse yet.
2) To sell toys you have to show a full story, but to sell a story you only allow a peek at characters.

Yeah, Thing is, they pretty much had complete freedom to do whatever they wanted with what were essentially commercials. When you're adapting something based existing STORY material, especially when 90% of said source material is garbage like LNs, you're hamstrung twofold.
