Season 1 had very solid writing for a kids show and it shows. Shudo was on the team that did Legend of the Galactic Heroes, he was miles above any writers they've had since.
XY might be better than Best Wishes, but it still has all the same problems of the more recent Pokemon series. Ash has been the main character for too long, Team Rocket has been around for far too long, several minor plots are recycled etc. This was all fresh in the original series, so it worked better and gained huge popularity. Now, nobody really cares anymore save for the niche fanbase.

I won't contest that Ash has become more boring. He was certainly at his most dynamic in the OS. But you try and turn him into that little shit he was in the OS again and you just make him look like a fucking idiot that should know better like in BW. I agree he's been the main character way too long and they should get rid of him. But at least let him win a league or something fuck.
I don't think he's bad in XY, he has this calm, confident and most importantly experienced trainer vibe going on. It's pretty boring yeah, but it works because honestly he should be like that at this point. He could have been a frontier brain for God's sake. Again though that's why he isn't an interesting character and should be replaced.
But the thing he isn't the only character in the show, and in my opinion this is the best his companions have been written since the OS. They kind of wrote themselves into a corner by insisting on using Ash. But they redeemed themselves by surrounding him with an excellent cast. I'm looking forward to tomorrows episode even though it's all about Clemont and Eureka precisely because they are interesting and the set-up of Eureka getting jealous of a girl marrying her brother leads to all kinds of fun ways just those two alone can react. Especially since so far she's spent the whole series trying to hook him up.
I got to disagree with with the team rocket complaint though. Yeah it's fucking dumb that that they are still around. But Pokemon is fucking dumb, it's basically cute animal abuse. So I don't think to much about it and enjoy the humor that they bring to the show. Which has been top notch as of late. Though if they did get rid of Ash (Which they should), I would insist TR left too.
Anyways this became a bit of an essay so sorry about that. I don't want to change your opinion, but I did want to get mine out there.

The Pokemon anime has always been just guilty fun. It also occasionally has good plots or development, even briefly, that make it worthwhile.
Most of the girls have good character arcs, except for Iris and Johto-era Misty, that makes them fun to watch too.

Season1 had writing and a story that was clearly going somewhere. I'm not sure if it was with advanced generation or some time before whatever the original goal was discarded and it turned into a pure marketing child pandering show, I'm not saying it wasn't one before but it had a real plot backing it up and it lost it. Now Ash is just a company mascot and not a real character, his story is no more interesting than Mickey Mouse's. My guess is that the decision to make Ash into a non-character brand happened shortly before AG as Ash vs Gary and the silver conference in general felt like it would have been the perfect ending to Ash's story if Blazikenfag hadn't been there.
