It's totally different
Ashita no Joe is a very dramatic story about a real mans man doing manly shit in a manly way that is inspirational on a very broad level
Ippo is about a nerd who grows a spine (but not much of one) after he falls in love with boxing. It eventually settles into boxer slice of life shenanigans where he makes doomed overtures at romance and his friends make dick jokes when they're not training or fighting in matches.
