He also worked a considerable period of time as a mercenary and no doubt enabled the atrocities of other, differently inclined mercenaries that got their "rape, murder, and steal" on liberally successfully because he helped win.

As someone else in this thread has already mentioned, I think the only character who has suffered on par with Guts is Killy from Blame!
And no he isn't emotionless, he just seems that way after all the suffering.
Nigga spends 1000s of years wandering through a hostile dystopian wasteland and all his companions end up dead. In terms of length of time spent suffering, Killy even has Guts beat. At least Guts has only suffered for a few decades.
Also, since Killy is immportal, and his dedication to his mission absolute, it's likely he will continue his existence of suffering for near eternity.
