There is actually a very sadistic chapter about it.
The first time Subaru sees Rem in coma, he kills himself immediately. He resurrects pretty much right before that point, and this is when he realizes he cannot go back in time to save Rem anymore.
Then later on during arc 4, Subaru is shown alternate timeline. He sees the world where he committed suicide above, and although his consciousness reverted to the save point, Emilia of that continuity comes into the room and finds his body. She cries and despairs screaming WHY WHY would you do this to me.

The chapter basically raised the horrible possibility that the timelines he died may have continued on their own afterwards, leaving everyone miserable.

The author is very good at making us feel like shit.

Well Re:Zero has been a very strange case.
Since its conception in Narou, Kadokawa has been pushing the title despite its low sales and low popularity ratings in Narou.

They kept printing novels, extras, and comic adaptation even back when the title was only in the top 150 of Narou, and novel sales were abysmal.
The sales never really improved much, and suddenly bam we also get an anime adaptation.

Since the anime announcement the title shot up in Narou rankings, and now in the top 30.

Mind you I've always liked this series, but the marketing around it certainly feels like manufactured popularity.
Like "we keep throwing money at it until general public notices it".

Either someone in Kadokawa really has faith in the series, or there's an attempt to force a franchise.
There's definitely something going on behind the scenes that we're not aware of.
None of Re:Zero's sales or rankings justify so much attention given to it by the publisher.

Arc2: At the end of the arc 2 you are reading, everything works out, Rem falls in love with Subaru, and the village children are saved.

Arc 3 starts out with Queen candidate meeting and to start the competition for the throne. Subaru loses trust of everyone, gets his ass beat by Julius in a duel after making an ass of himself, broken and alone except for Rem, he starts training under Vilhelm.
He finds out the mansion is in danger and tries to find a way to get back, but the White Whale of Gluttony is a threat on the road to avoid.
On the way he and Rem are captured and killed by the Cult. In some loops he manages to reach the mansion alone, but only to find the children he befriended piled in a mount of corpse, Ram mutilated in front of them, Emilia dead, and Puck's rage causing the entire land to freeze and kill Subaru.

In one of the encounters Subaru is tortured and have to see Rem slowly ripped to pieces to death and he is driven insane.
The next loop he's a drooling madman, but Rem tries to carry him back to the mansion, only to end up getting mutilated again and again.
Subaru finally manages to snap out of his madness thanks to anger, and vows to end this in the next loop.

Subaru realizes he needs to reconcile with people in the capital and find help.
He learns to atone for his arrogance, use his brain, and win back the trust of people.
He eventually manages to bring Julius, Vilhelm, soldiers under Cruche, and mercenaries of Anastasia to follow him.
The next dozens of chapters is dedicated to fighting the Whale. Those eaten by the White Whale are literally ERASED from the world, as if they never existed. Only Subaru can remember them. The group eventually defeats the whale.

This is the halfway point of arc 3. The brutal and bloody clash with the Witch Cult is the second half.
And true despair is in the second half.

I won't get into a lengthy description of the second half:
After the battle is finally won by Subaru and Betelgeuse, the Bishop of Sloth is killed, Subaru finds out that Bishop of Gluttony has eaten Rem. She is in a coma, and no one, not even Ram remembers who Rem was.

Rem was the only one who stayed with Subaru and supported him with unconditional love all this time, and Subaru couldn't bear it. So he kills himself.

Subaru wakes up to realize by defeating the Witch Cult the save point had moved forward. It is now impossible to save Rem. He despairs.

End of Arc 3 (and possibly where the anime will end)

I'm gonna add onto the suffering because I'm an asshole.
Rem brings up how she loves Subaru and wants to be with him, and due to her amazing support during the ordeal, he seriously considers it but tells her he still prioritizes Emilia.
Rem is alright with this and will do her best to convince to take them both, and of course Subaru will give it a shot but will abide by whatever Emilia decides on.
So once the fight is over and everything's peachy, he brings it up to Emilia on their way to rendezvous with others including Rem.
Except Emilia has no idea who this Rem girl is, and no one else does either, and he later finds her in a coma with no one else knowing who she even is either.
So he kills himself and it's already saved past the point where it happened.

Subaru always keeps his unconditional love for Emilia. Granted Emilia herself doesn't seem to be romantically interested in Subaru until like the end of the 4th arc, and even then her romance is very...platonic.

Rosewaal basically forces Emilia to undergo a trial she has no way of overcoming without Subaru's help.
Emilia constantly mentally breaks in this arc.
There's also loads of other fun things. Like dealing with the mansion (Beatrice) getting attacked while they're away, a swarm of Gluttony rabbits (imagine a locust swarm, but of rabbits that are super deadly and can't be killed unless you kill them all at the same time) that need dealt with.
Not to mention Rosewaal himself clearly being an enemy.

And the best part? Subaru gets to see a what-if segment of what might have happened (the person showing him these doesn't know if they're parallel worlds or really just the world calculating what would have happened) after he dies in certain loops.
Like Emilia bawling over Subaru killing himself after finding out Rem was in a coma.
Or Ram and Beatrice shocked that Subaru jumped off a cliff and killed himself.
Pack getting killed by Reinhardt after killing Subaru.
Subaru takes this all very hard.
