One of the major problems of Kimi Machi is that it has to keep coming up with new twists to inject drama and keep the story going, but they often don't seem to have been thought through(I've never thought that Seo had Kazama's story in mind when he had Eba end her long-distance relationship, I think he putin the break-up, then came up with a reason later).

Pretty accurate. Despite the phone breaking incident, she's probably Seo's most likeable main heroine.
For the full effect though, you need to read Suzuka, the series that preceded Kimi Machi, and which Fuuka is a sequel to, as the title character Fuuka is the child of Suzuka's main couple. That makes the shit that happens all the more mind-boggling.
It didn't bother me that much, as Kimi Machi seriously put me off of Seo's work so that I'd never become invested in his characters again, and I only skimmed Fuuka.

It's kind of sad that Kanzaki got forgotten. And in the heat of things, I sort of forgot about her myself after Asuka came into the picture. But now looking back I really liked her, and it's really a shame that she essentially disappeared from the series.
On one hand, Seo keeps you hooked because you watch the trainwreck happen and can't turn your eyes away, even if it makes you angry seeing what happens. On the other hand, I actually really liked the cast of KNIM, and I still have mostly fond feelings about the manga and get a little nostalgic about reading it. The early stuff was really fun, including that one shy girl that liked him. Eba moving was the first plot line that I didn't like, but the stuff with Asuka was really nice and almost redeemed the manga for me. However, we all know what happened after that.
The small town and country setting was fun and felt different, and although eventually going to Tokyo and having them in college would have been fine, I wish they had spent more time in the original setting. Eba is my least favorite character (along with her sister), so those chapters where they were just exclusively a couple were really boring, and I can hardly remember what some of the conflicts were about. Sucks that Akari basically settled, Asuka never got another love interest, and other girls like the cooking girl, restaurant girl, and other way better girls than Eba never got their time. At least Kanzaki gets plowed by a giant club dick, though. Special chapters (200.x) are the best.
