I miss tn's. I think Mori was using them on their dagashi subs, it was a welcome blast from the past.
They can really help elucidate culturally specific dialog and are good for learning about japanese culture.

Subbers stopped doing color coding because it's a total waste of time (not to mention that notably increases the chances of producing garbage styling). All you really need is two different variations for default and alternative dialogue (for differentiation during overlapping dialogue).
As for translation notes, they went away went translators realized that they're fucking dumb 99% of the time. If you're watching a translated piece of media entertainment, you should be able to understand the translation without having to resort to extra linguistic lessons mid-episode.
Translation notes can still have a place as separate extra information for those who want to know more (eg. by making TL note blogposts), but they should never be necessary for understanding the main content.

It works just fine most of the time, though. Unless you're one of those "MUH PURE NIPPONESE EXPERIENCE" type of people, in which case you should actually learn Japanese and read the original instead of thinking that a crippled "translation" is going to give you that.

Anime and manga is fiction, not some sort of academic literature or business documents. It's primary goal is to entertain, not to give Japanese linguistic lessons to foreigners. As such, it should be translated with functional equivalence in mind, period.
Like just consider for a moment something with a lot of jokes. Then consider the fact that nothing kills a joke faster than having to explain it. A comedy show where every single joke was translated "literally" and explained in notes would be basically taking a dump all over the whole idea of it being a comedy show.
People in general really underestimate the impact of script quality when it comes to actually enjoying a piece of media, and this very much applies to translations. A subpar translation can easily ruin a script that was very well written in its original language, especially when you're dealing with languages as distinct as Japanese and English.

Except I'm just talking about puns, where the translations often fail. At least with TN's you get the follow-up jokes, which are often the real punch lines.
I'm thinking specifically of the "bean knowledge" bit in Azumanga, which was awful. The puns in yuru yuri were OK largely because the only follow up was Yui laughing.

I like honorifics because they give you a hint about the relationship level between characters that really get lost in translation.
And the occasional widely know word or phrase.
But sometimes it's too much.

It gets complicated when the manga tries to talk about business documents or academic literature.
Or when something gets bent while using "Functional equivalence".

Scream did not affect me the same way as a localized Scream-clone (while I was in the target Age-range for the clone).
Some "High school" with "Young" Adult Actors VS. our local School System & genuinely young Actors was miles different.
It feels a bit like "Functional equivalence" clouds understanding in comparison to "Formal equivalence". (Implicitly mentioned in the chart.)
