1. They fucking love swords. You know how some Americans don't just use guns but fucking LOVE them, where they'll have waifu wars over which guns are the best guns act like their guns are the embodiment of their manhood and strength? A lot of Japanese are like that over swords.
2. The especially fucking love swords that are special. Magic holy swords and famous historical swords and swords that represent the authority of the king. The more of those boxes you check off, the more they fucking love it.
3. Foreign Things Are Cool. This one's a universal rule. Local stuff, it's boring and familiar and not at all special. But foreign stuff? It's exotic, and mysterious, and unlike those rusty lumps in the museum you went to on a school trip you could maybe believe they're magical.
So put that all together. Excalibur is a magic holy sword of the king, just like Kusanagi, only it's foreign which makes it more special except not TOO foreign so all your viewers know what it is without you having to explain.
