I like Shinji as a protagonist, but I think there is a really fine line between being tolerably weak and even pathetic and being an annoying whiny pussy that Evangelion did just right.
I don't know any examples, but I'd think if I'd call someone a faggot in a different show, it'd be more likely because they didn't manage to do such a difficult character as well.

There are plenty of earlier analogues, but it isn't until after the industrial revolution that you get the ability to really pull a running battle for at least as long as Eva (with fairly constant actions, sieges being the notable exception).
Amphibious invasions are never easy, but Iwo Jima offers some of the best terrain in the word, and the Japanese were incredibly well dug in and hinged their stragety around making the battle as nightmarish as possible.
In Stalingrad, the Soviet Union threw effectively untrained conscripts into battle; things like caution were considered defeatism and grounds for summary execution. The Purges weren't exactly ancient history, so you had to be very cautious about trusting anyone.
And so forth.
Sure, Shinji was fighting eldritch abominations, but with the Eva, he was broadly in the same weight class, and more importantly, he could take a hit. Very rarely did he encounter anything that could end him as trivially as a howitzer round landing next to him. Anything that happened, he could at least fight. Plus, he had a whole team and a huge organization dedicated to finding solutions to all the bizarre Angel problems he ran into on the battlefield.
On the topic of fighting, he didn't even do all that much of it. During the Battle of Brittan, RAF pilots would often have to sortie three, four, or five times a day during periods of high-intensity combat, and there were stretches that lasted for weeks where Lufwaffe Fighter Pilots could expect two combat missions every single day.
Yeah, clinical depression sucks, I'd know. But Shinji did an excellent job of making it as hard for himself as possible.

A lot of the running away and/or ruminating he does. Broadly speaking, I've found that the best way to make my depression worse is to focus on how depressed I am, especially when all it does it make whatever problem I have worse.
Yes, he has problems. They're pretty bad. But he never even makes and effort to fix them, at most he does damage control in individual situations.
If he's worried about his ability to fight in the Eva, learn something about combat. Krav Maga. How to use an assault rifle. Push for combat sims during the Sync Testing rather than just navel gazing.
If he's worried about the WTF Bullshit angels, try and learn something about what's going on. Try and get Ritsuko or someone on her staff to give you the reader's digest version; the practical impacts of a lot of really hard science stuff can be surprising easy to grasp in general terms, if not to the extent necessary to engineer around them. Use the past battles as practicals.
If he's worried about Auska being a bitch, confront her. History has shown us that the only counter for German aggression is force; figure out what her problem is, or at least make it not worth her time.
