The manga has a bizarre art style but is very readable albeit long and ongoing. The anime is a pretty faithful adaptation with a solid OST, great VA cast, and just finished its season 2 with a confirmed S3 on the way, so it'll be super easy to catch up with. It really depends on how you want to take it in.
I personally started with the anime in S1, then caught up on the manga throughout S2. Some stuff just has such a potent impact animated over being on a page that I would hate for you to miss out.

I have a pretty low tolerance for anime, especially sports series where they have characters that sit and explain what is happening for over half the episode. Manga is so much nicer because you can read 4+ volumes in an hour and get the whole story faster. Some things are just better animated though, generally heroes and robots, but sports are split pretty evenly over shit in animation and fantastic in animation. Kuroo's a real card. You won't see much out of him in S1, but S2 gives him some showcasing that makes him pretty fucking cool. You're going to have a hard time finding people to outright hate in this show, even Tsukishima the Bellend has his moments.

Sounds good to me. Sports anime is doing something wrong if I don't like some of the opponents as much if not better than the main cast. I'm shit at names though, so many to remember so fast. The Bellend is kind of refreshing, you don't usually get out right antagonism from team mates. Tsukishima gets a whole load of development in S2 and will do in S3 too. But it feels realistic instead of generic shounen personality change.
