Personally I would recommend the OVAs since the flow of each episode was designed to be 55 minutes as opposed to 22 which will result in some pacing issues for the TV series.

Not really. Unicorn is a self-contained story within a much larger universe. It explains basically everything, the only things you won't pick up on are references to previous series.
Literally if you just know who "Zeon" and the Federation are (gundam wiki), you're pretty much good to go.

A group of radical militants known as the Sleeves want to secure a secret item known as Laplace's Box in order to revive Zeon (which lost the previous war). The current powers that be are trying to stop them.

You're not missing much. The HG's are okay, but the MG have a couple of crippling problems, even after they tried to fix them with the OVA version. Hilariously the SD knight unicorn is probably the most stable and fun of the unicorn kits.

I got a couple of newer MGs in 2014, back when I was still into it, and the hands, while very detailed and articulate, were fucking terrifying to work with. They come off the sprue feeling stuck, so you have to fucking force each individual joint to move, and every second your applying that liiiittle bit of pressure, you're worried the whole fucking fingers going to snap somewhere you can't fix. The wrists are also very weak, and it makes one worried to leave them any kind of iconic pose with one hand, like the RX78 and it's final "firing into the sky" pose.
HGs were neat at the time, but I go back and look at them now, and it's like "I spent how much on these things?" I was such a sucker.

If you're talking about these style of hands, the Unicorn MGs (The Unicorn gundam specifically, not all the MS from the series) don't use them. They use the ones more typical at the time of the original Unicorn ver.Ka release where each finger is a individual part on a balljoint and you assemble the hands together with only one joint per finger.
The kind like pic related were first introduced to the MG line years later with the Nu ver.Ka and only a couple of the Unicorn MS releases like the Jesta use them.

Small write up on what I thought about Unicorn in General.
Gundam Unicorn is my favorite series in Gundam. The cast resonates well with me, and because it is more modern than other Gundam series, there is more visual storytelling and less cringy dialogue. Actually the writing as a whole is my favorite in Gundam. Production values are very strong. Hiroyuki Sawano has very uplifting tracks that fit well with the theme of Unicorn.
Now the story is the weakest part of Unicorn, but is still quite good. I think reception to the central plot device can be mixed, but personally I thought it made sense. Some weird lapses in logic occur about halfway through, but on the whole do not detract too much from the plot. You do need to know prior events (0079, Zeta (series only), ZZ, CCA) to Unicorn to understand what the fuck is going on. But you should have already watched Gundam because it's great.
Should you watch the OVA or the Recut?
My opinion is go with the OVA for now. The pacing is not ruined and it doesn't have those horrible spoilers. If you insist on seeing the new content, then avoid the OP and ED.

It says a lot about the fanbases current tastes when the most popular composer out there pretty much seems to be the one who least gives a single fuck particularly when it comes to that godawful badly mixed vocal shit and lyrical composition and arrangement that doesn't even make sense musically. Improbably I think his music continues to get worse and just more sort of generic noise with each successive single and album. Was there even a single real instrument aside from the piano in either the opening or end cause it sounded like pretty much all that grindy synth sound he always uses for everything now? I know there was clearly an orchestra in the actual show but that's from like 6 years ago.
