It was my favorite anime back in days. Great direction and music, but apparently they had to cut the scenario because show wasn't popular enough for 3 cour or some shit.
I loved it, to be honest. It was a really good mesh of romance and fantasy, and had proper world building. It feels like a guilty pleasure show though.
Isaac Newton ending was hilarious and I wouldn't have it any other way. It needed about 5 more episodes before the end, though, fucking budget.

Escaflowne had pretty great worldbuilding to end with Isaac Newton as a villain. Although it had other dumb plotpoints, like Hitomi's teenage girl shit or Serena.

I finished rewatching it two weeks ago and it holds up really well. The mechs and the world are amazing. The ending is the only thing that isn't great. Isaac activates the machine which supposedly turns human thought into energy and all we get is that everyone starts fighting each other. And Issac goes "yeah it totally works, that's what it's supposed to do I guess".

Why not? I'm not gonna argue that, say, NGE is Deep and Meaningful because I don't believe that, but at least it TRIED. It's not a "urgh, 4/10" criticism, more a "eh, 6/10" criticism.
Also, Newton wasn't stupid so much as uninspired. Yeah, okay, the show's on the side of Keats, and yeah, it could have conveyed that without just straight-out having Villain Newton, but at least it was the right choice. If Keats had been the villain, THAT would make no sense and be stupid.
