When is it considered, that an Anime did well in the Blu-Ray sales? Or at how much sales is it likely, that the Anime gets a second season? (As long is there's still something left to show, that is)
Depends on the show, but usually starting from around 6-7k or more on average you can hope for another season.

Weekly, i asume?
Sales mean jack all, it just comes down to if the publisher wants another season for advertising purposes.

Total per volume.

Why is Japan so bad at capitalism?

Ah, okay. Thank you for the heads up, anon!
For adaptions (especially manga) it is more important how the anime increases sales for the source material
They are basically just expensive advertisments

It depends on the source material. If they used it all up in one season then anything else would have to be OVA, if not they'll probably have season 2.

For /a/ it's whatever allows for the most shitposting and something can be considered simultaneously flopping hard and BTFOing everything else depending on what /a/ needs for it's memes. For publishers and actual real life the general industry agreement seems to be somewhere in the realm of 3-4K minimum to be considered a worthwhile venture, though for the bigger publishers like Aniplex that splurge what seems like at least 3 times as much on advertising and marketing compared to everyone else they are probably looking for something like 6-7K minimum.
Really though since most anime made nowadays are just advertisements for games and merch it's barely about the Blu-Ray disc sales anymore which are mainly just used for shitposting purposes on sites like /a/ and Yaraon. It used to be that people figured BD disc sales meant a better chance at a second season but with everything being so cross-promoted now that really doesn't factor in.
How possible is GATE S3?

also since moeshit the importance merchandise has become way bigger
Some anime are just made to sell merch where they try to bait the real fanatical otaku
>>139498316
But that's wrong you retard. BD sales DO matter and a lot. Sure, there are few exceptions when a complete flops with hugely popular manga get new seasons, but for an average show disc sales are the most important factor.

4000 units seem to be the inflection point. 50% of 5k+ average series ultimately get a sequel.

You mean since mecha, the importance of merchandise has become way bigger, which would be since the 70s.

Pretty possible, i think.

They have a really fucked up system of production, distribution, advertising, and talent. It's super incestuous. You can thank the Zaibatsu system for setting the model of Japanese capitalism. The same sort of problem afflicts their film industry, too.

Really interesting read. Thanks for that.
Blu-ray is dying, streaming is the new hotness.

It is a success when the creators / original mangaka don't have to buy the BDs.
