If you buy a bitlaser, 1 day.
If you study the normal way it's not possible to learn Japanese.
>>
can i learn to only read japanese?

i'm not really interested in understanding it spoken or being able to speak (spoken may be useful for untranslated shows, but it's not a big deal to me), but i'd like to be able to read and by extension type. especially since any speaking exercise or whatever would involve making sound, which i don't like doing because i'm living with parents.

i spend all day on the computer so i just want to read and maybe at some stage type. (i'm assuming writing may also come into it, i have no need to write in english let alone japanese but if it helps for exercises etc i can always do that too.)

but my impression is that most guides are probably oriented to people who want a rounded understanding of the language instead of someone basically wanting to be deaf.

it's a stupid question i know.
>>
>>139471754
Do you not subvocalize at all?
>>
>>139471754
DJT mostly focuses on reading / listening / massive amounts of input before doing output, so yeah, should be fine. Doing the other stuff just helps strengthen your knowledge. Should probably at least echo when doing vocab alone or something so your gaijin pronunciation isn't as bad when you do eventually want to start speaking.
>>
>>139471754
That's what you'll mostly be able to do before you can speak. It's probably better not to learn the language in general, save your time.

Yes, the purest reason to use SRS flashcards is to not forget things you already learned, and they're the very least time consuming thing for doing so.

>Okay I learned Kana, do I start learning radicals now, and then Kanji and then Grammar

Grammar now. Immediately. You can do radicals if you want, they don't take long. Kanji study is something you have to seriously consider for yourself because it can go either way. Eventually you want to start memorizing words and reading (at the same time). You should know the very most common 50-100 words as a result of taking your grammar guide.

I feel pretty lucky. In 8th grade those of us who didn't pay money for a field trip were gathered into one classroom and had to wait the whole day. The supervising teacher handed out a worksheet on passive voice and to this day that remains my only formal education on passive structures in language. Feels good to know missing out on a field trip benefited me years later.

>>
>>139477215
I barely comprehend what you just posted. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>139477162
So in english grammar there's this concept called the subject

You might know about it, it's the noun that's responsible for having the verb attached to it

"The car turns on"

The car is the subject and it's directly experiencing the action "turn on"

With a transitive verb the subject performs an action on something else called the "direct object"

"The engine makes noise"

The engine is the subject, but it's performing the complicated action "make noise". In "make noise", "noise" is the direct object of "make".

Passive happens when what is normally the direct object is placed in the position of subject. English uses adjectival nouns, "be", and optionally "by" to form the passive.

"The food was eaten"

The food is the subject and "eaten" is the passive verb.

>>139477180

So if we use the following sentence, "The engine roars", as an example, the engine would be the subject and 'roars' would be the passive verb? I've never really learned English 'properly' and as such these terms elude me.
>>
>>139477275
I fucked up 8 but managed to go until 9, practice makes perfect.
>>
>>139477462
No, "roars" there is intransitive. Passive means that another noun specifically did the action, even if they're not written.

Need some help with tricky (to me) grammar, from the prologue to the first LOGH novel. The context is historical exposition, starting with a description of a kind of golden age and moving on to describe its flaws.
>とはいっても、幾つかの傷がなかったわけではない。まず宇宙海賊《スペース・パイレーツ》の存在があった、(...)。そのなかには自由を謳歌する義賊的な人物も存在しており、彼らと彼らを追う連邦軍との対決は立体TVに多くの素材を提供したものである。
I can gather that there were some freedom-loving idealists among the space pirate population, that federation was fighting all pirates equally, and that someone was sponsoring a lot of content against someone else on the future-TV.
But who was sponsoring the content against whom? Was it the freedom-loving subset of the space pirates working against the federation? Was it the federation against all pirates?
>>
>>139477610
I believe it's saying that the federation's "duels" with these pirates become fodder for TV shows.
>>
>>139477566
Not the same guy but
>I was shot at
Here you are the subject, and something else verbed you (shot you). I don't know if that helped but showing an example like this makes it clear for me
>>
>>139477566
not him but in is the sentence "I think I got it" passive? Because "I" would be the subject that gets acted upon, right?
>>
>>139475702

This guy is God. (if he's actually fluent in all the languages he listed.)
>>
>>139477654
Didn't even think about that.
Here's more context:

(from which I gather that the pirates were typically aligned with corrupt interests, and they were screwing the outer regions by raising the costs of business and reducing governance)

So I guess that would support your interpretation - Reality wasn't like you'd expect from those Robin Hood-esque TV shows, as the pirates mostly made things worse for everyone, including the little guy.
>>
>>139477838
>if he's actually fluent in all the languages he listed.
Hint: he's not. Knowing 50 languages to fluency would put him in literally world-famous territory.
>>
>>139477730
"i" is the one who thinks, "i" is the one who got it

You'll finish katakana far before grammar, and both grammar and katakana are pure equal priority. Both are necessary.

You can be understood with awful grammar. You will just sound retarded and possibly cute
>>
>>139479242
Where are you even seeing that?
>>
>>139479395
Did I say it's unnecessary? It's not a priority to spend his time now stressing over his katakana if he doesn't get it, he should go over it and if he forgets along the way, he shouldn't worry to much about going back to it because it'll come naturally as he progresses his grammar, whereas the inverse is not true.

As I assume the guide said
>>
>>139479516
>You can be understood with awful grammar. You will just sound retarded and possibly cute
There is not a scenario where someone saves enough time by skipping katakana that their grammar improves a noticeable amount.
Furthermore, at that point grammar would be even less of an issue than the simple fact that they won't know any words.
Furthermore x 2, at that level it will be extremely difficult to understand what other people are saying so a conversation in the first place is out of the question.
>>
>>139479560
I really do not envision someone learning katakana naturally through grammar, at least any easier than they would through realkana. And anyway the time saved by skipping katakana isn't significant by any measure.
>>
>>139479395
>read a VN with no katakana knowledge but real kana open on the side so you can look them up
>hardly slows you down because of how rare katakana is

>read a VN with shit grammar and a grammar guide open on the side
>pretty much impossible because just recognizing which aspect of grammar you're missing is hard

Katakana and grammar are not of equal importance. I know you're just trying to say katakana is also important, but it's not necessary to the extent everything else is.
>>
>>139479351
Cool. Done.
>>
>>139479658
Again, again, the time saved by skipping katakana isn't significant by any measure. They are of equal import precisely because Katakana takes a fraction of the time that grammar does. Obviously if there's a choice between fluency in grammar and knowing katakana, the former is preferably because it's much loftier and takes more time, but that's not the situation at all.

Furthermore katakana comes in strings of words. It makes no sense to read VNs and then everytime a katakana word comes up to use realkana to look up all 5-6 katakana because you don't know them. Learning them all before hand is far more logical and efficient. And not nearly as time consuming!
>>
>>139479624
I have never once said to skip katakana

I'm saying it's not as important to devote his time to reviewing the katakana as it would be to move on because naturally it'll progress through the examples the guide will likely give to him (unless it's actually a shit guide that doesn't incorporate katakana at all, which I doubt)
>>
>>139479885
The original post mentioned that the guide says its not so important to learn Katakana so thats what I was going off of.

Furthermore, reviewing katakana takes even LESS time than learning it (couple minutes on real kana to go through them all?) so your point seems even weaker to me now.

Also protip, if nips compliment your Japanese it means it's passable but not all that great. If you're actually fluent they get suspicious and you get 敬遠'd immediately.
>>
>>139480169
Perhaps you should rethink the state of affairs the sentence describes.

Try this:
Lee is somewhere far aways from Korea, his family is in Korea, flying to Korea from far away is expensive, that's why the ticket is expensive because Lee's family is in Korea.
>>
>>139480294
Yeah, you'll pick it up eventually, because you'll be reviewing it. And thus, katakana has the same importance in the beginning as anything else.

I don't know what you're thinking is here but the logic is that rather than taking an extra 10 minutes to review the katakana before a lesson, I'm saying that just going through with the session normally and he'll be exposed to the katakana and eventually learning it without needing to take time out of his session to do it seperately.

I honestly don't know what else you're trying to argue, that he SHOULD take time out of his grammar studies to isolate the katakana learning? Because if so, I think we've reached an impass and I don't really care to do or look for a study to prove which of us is right
>>
>>139480687
Perspective. Perspective of entire language, grammar is more important. Perspective of a language learner starting out, both are of equal import. As described in the post.
>>
>>139480675
That's the Tae Kim guide.
>>
>>139480712
The time's going to be taken out whether it's studying before the lesson or whether it's having to stop the lesson midway to figure out what katakana are being used.

you're assuming that he's going to retain very little of the katakana

in all likelihood, in the experience of everyone I've known, it's only ever a hand-full of characters that you can't remember and the amount of time it would take to reference a chart to look it up when he does forget is peanuts compared to reviewing it regardless of whether he's already got it locked down

plus, a common memorization protip is that erring reinforces learning better

I'm not sure what this guy is trying to get at. There's a chart linked right there in the guide ("such as this one for example") and the linked wikipedia and tae kim articles both feature a chart of Hiragana and Katakana.

I try to make things straightforward, but I can't cure blindness.
