Her deep religious devotion that was pushed into her as a child, plus her sinful nature that she tries repress made her an interesting character. She was kinda like Frollo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, just less "evil." But then Miura threw all that out of the window and made her a worthless, uninteresting character.

I literally just finished rereading the conviction arc and I don't really agree. Farnese was always very weak willed and unsure of the things she was doing; meeting Guts and waking up for her illusion was a good thing for her. Only problem with her becoming Casca's baby sitter and learning magic, is her past "craziness" really hasn't been addressed since then. Maybe cause of their groups current settings doesn't really lend to her pain fetish but I hope it does get brought up again eventually.

I mean, all the time, there is some tension of some sort, and then puck comes in with some stupid fucking pun to ruin it. I mean, I get that there are times for levity to provide some comic relief, but why does it have to be in every goddamn scene?

But that was the point of the character. She was supposed trapped in her devotion. When Guts shows up it makes her insecure of her own views, and that begins her character arc. She was supposed to step away from her devotion and start giving in into sinning little by little. When she "wakes up" it's when she was supposed to reach her epiphany. But by doing so this early and abruptly pretty much killed the character. She has nowhere to go now. Miura tried to give her a new arc with the "I'm learding magic now XD" bullshit, but it's uninteresting as fuck.

Her strength came from her adversity. Her delusions and strange fetishes were the result of the fuckness that she went through as a child, and they were what kept her together. Even though they were not character traits that were good for her as a person, they were what enabled her to deal with the terrible things she experienced later on, like going to war. After she lost her delusions, she became unable to effectively deal with the madness that surrounds her.
