The animation and soundtrack are god tier for one thing. It's a pretty nice coming of age story too if you want to try and take a deeper look into it, but mostly, it's just good fun. I know fun is considered a buzzword, but seriously, it's a comedy. If it's not your kind of humor that's too bad, that's one of the harder things to please the most amount of people with. Regardless of whether the humour is in your taste or not, it can't be denied that it's an extremely well made series.

I don't hate how they talk about its symbolism, I hate how they act like it's "deep" or even "genius" as I've seen one person call it, as if it's good solely because it has symbolism. If I criticize the show, they act as if I didn't "get" it as if "getting" it made them smart or something. Many things have symbolism but they're not necessarily deep or even good by having it. For example, Starmyu and Hibike! Euphonium utilized symbolism from time to time and yet those are generally regarded as fairly simple shows so what makes FLCL so special for using it?

It's why so many people call it random nonsense, because if you take everything in it at face value that's exactly what it is. I'm sure someone right now is thinking "well that's just pretentious!", and maybe it is, maybe it isn't. That's a whole other lengthy discussion to get into that I'm way too tired for. Some people like such "DEEP", "artsy fartsy", "pretentious" stuff or whatever you wanna call it. It's fun to think about, to analyze and dissect movies come up with your own interpretation at the end of it, and then discuss and compare to what other people think.
