The setting and characters are nice and charming. I liked the SoL elements it had as well as the somewhat carefree and peaceful atmosphere it had.
The story suffered a bit just because Douman didnt really do anything to seem like a threat.
I liked it though.
The setting could've been okay, but the monster designs are bland and uninspired. The plot was eventless, impactless and unengaging. The characters were as interesting as wet toilet paper. Everything was awful all around, it's probably the worst show I've ever finished.

Not him but Raikou is a better Garo than Leon, the suit is tons better as well, Dan being the secondary suit is pretty cool too. Seimei was cuter than Ema but still not as cute as Lara.
That aside the plot was just generic, I imagine a lot of the reasons about budget are true especially with Retsuden coming out. A lot of the episodes just felt like filler, it doesn't even feel like Inoue wrote anything, where are the misunderstands, the rivers?
Raikou is overpowered taking all the tension from fights
Douman's motivations are literally 'Muh darkness'
Most horrors feel stale in comparison to HnK horrors, especially design wise.
Low budget
No development for the characters. We see Alf learn everything he knows from the ground up, while Raikou just gets and arbitrary powerup mid season and Yasuske gets the orb.
Setting is hit or miss, while Not!Spain was universally liked.
No waifus other than Seimei.
Weak writing on most episodes.
Basically HnK set the bar too high, while GnT was suffering from budget and time issues.

I know. But along with the muscle like armor all over it looked like a hellbeast just like Leon in S1.
S2 is more noble with more streamlined armor pieces not covering the whole suit and showing the sleek black under armor.
But if you want to compare noble designs i prefer Awakened Raikou. It also shows the under armor, that now has lines that i love, it has a more armor pieces than S2 Leon, themed after japanese armor and the whole ornaments on it remind of a ceremonial, almost armor of the gods, type feel.

It's the setting and the characters mostly.
By setting though, I mean both the actual general area the story takes place in and the environment. I feel like I can't be the only one that likes the medieval fantasy spanish setting right? But either way, Japan is just plain boring in comparison. Character names, visuals, clothing, architecture, it's all just boring. But even worse, most of the story takes place in just a few places, or at least seemingly so because it all looks the same. HnK's central setting was a castle town, same as GnT, but it's huge, and not only do they explore it, introduce characters in it that keep showing up, they also frequently go outside of it, and it keeps the setting of episodes fresh.
And this extends to the fight scenes. Alot of HnK uses the environment in its fights. Swing around giant towers in european castles, jumping across, on and around trees in forests, fighting colossal enemies inside massive ravines, there's alot of that. It's just alot more fun to look at. GnT has none of that, because it's so japanese. You have mostly alot of fights in flat stone gardens, small riversides, really lame fights that have none of the cool stuff. First episode disappointed me especially-- They fight inside a fucking seal. In contrast, first episode of HnK has a Horror throw a fucking flaming barnhouse at Leon in midair, requiring him to jumping through it to kill the fucker.
It would take me way more time to get into the characters so I won't, but the whole show just feels like no one working on it wanted to make it. And everytime something maybe interesting could happen, The show suddenly goes "Nevermind." I think that's a pretty good way to sum up the entire thing actually, just "Nevermind'. It's disappointing.

Terrible fight fight scenes. Consistently lousy animation. The chill atmosphere almost worked except that the show failed at being funny when it tried for the most part and the chill did not work with the idea that almost everyday random people were just dying from horrors. Episodic series can work if individual episodes work, but most of them were cliche or uninteresting. Once the plot started happening it was still moronic and uninteresting.
I say this having sort of enjoyed it, but It's really one of the worst things I've watched for this long. I kept hoping it would get better, but it managed to only get worse, and not in a fun way like seasonal trainwrecks.

Just watched the last episode. For me it was the whole tone of the show, it had a ad tendency towards mood whiplash, especially in the first half. The second half was more consistent mood-wise, but it still never became great. It's also obvious the animation was a pretty low priority for MAPPA.
Overall I'd rank the show as pretty mediocre. Seimei was the best character of he series.
