Toriyama is the problem though. They were going to revive the franchise anyway but he chose to get involved during the production of Battle of Gods and rewrote the script. It was bad and RoF was bad. Animation aside Super is also bad.

Z's plot was extremely linear, it was basically just Goku (and once Gohan) deafeating one main villain after the other. At least S has Goku getting defeated by Beerus, and plot lines and new characters that remain mysterious across several arcs like Whiz and Vados.
