What defines an "entry level" anime? Popularity? Westernized setting and values? Lack of "weirdness?"

Popularity.

Did a lot of people enjoy it? Then it's entry level.
To be a real weeb, you need to suffer through shit you hate just so you can say you watched it.

Combination of easy access and popularity.

They have to become popular for a reason first. Why is Bebop, for example, so popular?
>>
Something that is engaging and easy to understand.
>>

That's not what a definition is.
>>
>>139386465
because it's good

Embrace being a casual. You will enjoy anime and your life more. I branch out just a little to the obscure.

It's a slippery slope though.

Cowboy bebop is a prime example. Most of the show feels like an action gangster movie from the 90s/80s and it ages well because it really has little to nothing to do with Japan at that time. A series almost completely detached from any modern anime series in the last 20 years can be entry level.
>>
Popularity primarily, but also inoffensive content to a 'normal' viewer, such as genres like action or drama that have immediate parallels in other popular media. Bebop is the primary example of an 'entry level' anime because it's varying but grounded concepts coupled with a fair amount of action make it something pretty much anyone can like, and its popularity gives it more exposure inherently.

That doesn't mean it's bad by any means.
>>
Ease of access. Basically some shit is different in japan than in the west and people tend to get weirded out if they watch non-entrylevel shit.

A girl wondering which part of her crepe is the top half is not something that you can easily digest.

Its the same with western stuff. You can watch an action flick easily, easy to understand, great action to keep you hooked, simple yet satisfying story. Meanwhile some deep movie is hard to follow, has a non obvious message and might just weird you out.

Why is Kill la Kill considered to be entry-level when it'd be pretty offensive to the average person?
>>
>>139386796
Because it's a meme

Entry level is just another way of saying accessible.
It is an absence of tropes that are almost exclusive to the medium, that otherwise require "experience" to understand fully.

Jokes about Tsunderes? Not entry level
Hotsprings groping even though none of them are lesbians? Not entry level

Anime also has an extra hurdle to being entry level because it is so commonly written in the context of Japanese culture, which can be off-putting for people outside Japan who don't understand why that guy walked in on the girl having a bath? Before going to bed?

So typically entry level shows feature universal archetypes that everyone can understand, don't rely on established anime tropes to tell their story, and are far enough removed from Japanese culture that your racist grandpa doesn't have a stroke

People use the term entry to describe a series they don't like or a series they are trying to insult. Someone called FLCL entry level the other day in a /co/ thread and I disagree one hundred percent on that one. A series thats either love it or hate and thats so damned engrained in anime culture as haruhi or FLCL can't possibly be entry if anything if you try to use it as entry level for someone you are trying to get into anime you are probably likely to turn them off entirely to anime.

it played on toonami or adult swim i think??

i feel like thats half of what makes anything entry level

Entry level != Popular
>Love Live is entry level

How many people entered the anime community through it. Duh. This is why Cowboy Bebop will forever be the most entry-tier show in existence.Through being the first show to premiere on a hyped up new American channel, it informed probably close to 1 million Americans as to what anime was.
