They won't do anything that isn't massively profitable for them. They would especially know when Tanigawa stopped publishing his novels and only did 2 books for Surprise.
The only way relatively unprofitable things get done under their watch is if their subsidiaries do it. Unfortunately, half of them don't exist anymore for that reason.

Kadokawa is a publishing company, they make money when books are sold. That is why there needs to be fresh books on the shelves for Kadokawa to sell, and justify putting up the money to produce the anime.
Character licensing is part of it too.
Another part of it that doesn't get talked about as much is that a lot of the producers are gone. The people who really believed in the project, and would put in the effort to make it happen, have moved on.

The Music, Anticipation, Mystery (suspense), Action, Atmosphere, and Comedic timing were, for it's time, mostly revolutionary in that they set up a premise that had not been explored quite like it was until then.
The music slowly captures your interest, and when coupled with mystery and decent comedic timing -- the payoff is fabulous. You're essentially set up by the need to want to know what's either 1.) Causing the situation, 2.) How to prevent the situation from getting worse, 3.) Or what to do when it's too late -- and watching them all in anticipation as they solve the mystery is the biggest redeeming quality of Haruhi.
You got your uptime, with the mysteries and action, and then the transition over to downtime, aka, playtime, which again, further fuels your curiosity about what could possibly happen next if things.
You see...the biggest thing is, is that, the way they tell the story, be it in the source material, or in the anime, is told in such a way that, once you reading, if you stop reading, it's a story that you literally cannot fill in the blanks for, unlike most modern shows.
Haruhi literally defined its own genre, and if you don't believe me, then ask yourself this; Have you, for the past 10 years, seen a show, who's ending you could not at least somewhat predict the ending of?
Deep down, I think we all know why we love haruhi.
