Did Sheryl/Ranka sing Nyan Nyan Service Medley at the end of the conflict, or did they sing Sayonara no Tsubasa? Who knows.
Did Alto not pick a girl, or did he pick Sheryl? Who knows.
The way Macross deals with their "canon" is that the major events did happen, but specifics with regards to those events are never clear.
And they don't explicitly talk about the events in detail in future entries either.

Fun fact the movie's ending was what was originally planned ending for the TV series but it was changed last minute because they felt it wouldn't fit. Despite this though as far as Kawamori or any of the staff, or Macross continuity (as weird as it is) is concerned Alto and Sheryl are in a serious relationship that will probably end in marriage (Macross The Ride continuation of the TV series) and they've said that there isn't there is no love triangle in episode 25.

Tone-wise, and they're right, because they would have landed in Vajra planet right after the battle. A scene of him rejecting Ranka wouldn't fit, especially when the characters should be cooling off and there's nothing to prompt him to do so. Despite this both Yoshino and Kawamori have confirmed that Alto was in love with but not with Ranka, his feelings towards Ranka are entirely filial in nature (which is why the TV series constantly compares Alto, Brera, and Ozma in regards to Ranka).

This is also the impression I got with the TV version. Their relationship worked much better as a possible romantic one in the movies. I think her and Alto being friends from the start made a lot more sense, compared to just latching on so hard and completely one-sidedly to him.

That would be fine if the whole romance theme wasn't forever ruined in anime. We have thousands of stupid romance/harem shows where 2 characters seem to love each other yet it never results in anything. The show drags on and after every step forward in their relationship it resets back as like nothing happened. Character's struggle to confess to each other can last forever and end with nothing. That's why modern viewer never can be sure that relationship will actually progress without a firm confirmation. People don't need a scene with marriage and children. A simple "I love you" is all viewers need. If authors decide to make a second season they just can't backpedal after confession and pretend like nothing happened anymore. That's why even though Alto and Sheryl both loved each other everyone was dissatisfied with the ending of TV.

Confession works as confirmation of their future and not their current status. We already know that they love each other. But that doesn't mean that they will end with each other. We didn't have an epilogue after the TV series so we could only imagine what could happen next. And this where "uncertainty" lies, this is when haremshit logic kicks in.
Even that implied sex scene didn't matter that much. In Gundam SEED Kira was banging that red haired girl yet he ended up with Lacus.
"I love you" in anime works the same way as "and they lived happily ever after" in fairy tales. With that author says that everything will be fine with their relationship, they will get married, have 100 kids etc.
