What is it about Shingeki no Kyojin that draws in newfags in such numbers?
I couldn't name anything in particular that sets it apart from other shows. It's animation is good but not amazing. Waifu game beyond Mikasa is weak.

Diverse cast, great animation, great action scenes, interesting premise, edgy, funny, intriguing mysteries that pop up every so often, etc.
Though you might disagree with me on a few or most of those, I think it's kind of obvious why it's so popular. It's like asking why Redline is popular.I don't even like it.
Consistent action and it abandons a lot of anime tropes that drive the norms away

truth, an 8.0 on MAL is really more like a 7, you can take a full 1 off every rating and it'll still be roughly accurate
makes sense though tbf, only the people who like a show will take the time to go rate it, people who dont will just drop it, thats why sites like IMDB overrate as well
SnK got me into anime.
For me, it was because a lot of youtube channels I watched (Funhaus, Rooster Teeth,etc.) mentioned it a lot and it was easily accessible on Netflix. It has its flaws but its definitely not as bad as /a/ says it is. It'll be interesting to see how the second series does, it was the point in the manga where it differed too much from the original premise so I dropped it.
