She starts off as a rich character who he sees as looking down on the poor and she tries to change his perspective of her throughout the series by helping him but it usually ends up with her looking down on him, at least from Joe's perspective.
She does so much for him but he only sees the bad points of her actions and convinces himself that she hasn't changed since he meet her. He also ignores all of the times she tries to show him that she is also a woman and not just some rich girl. Then when she finally accepts her own feelings and tries to take responsibility for what she has done for him (even though she had good intentions), he brushes her aside one last time as he has always done because boxing means more to him.
No. I would say this is definitely outside the norm. It's a very interesting love story.
