I suppose that you're right, but Haruko was never a defining element of the show for me. She was a great character, and I loved that throughout everything she did NOT grow, which was in stark contrast to pretty much every other character in the show, but FLCL's charm, for me, was more Naoto's own experiences and growth - Haruko in that regard was simply a representation of grown-ups to a kid: focused around the concept of sex, and very difficult to understand in many ways, but still empathic and a figure you look up to.
Assuming they decide to keep the theme of growth and puberty, they could still go about it a fresh, new way. In the end, I suppose that it all comes down to what fans consider 'hallmark' aspects of FLCL's themes.

Well, I'm not so sure. But then, it's all subjective as to what makes FLCL what it is, and Haruko has definitely become a symbol of the show and Gainax in general, so I'm sure mainline fans of the show will agree with you much more than me.
At the end of the day, I am glad that FLCL is getting more screen-time. Even if it turns out subpar, I hope people will go back and check out the original, and they'll get some enjoyment out of it.

Naota wanted to grow up fast and be treated like an adult but through the process of the show learns that it's okay to act like a kid every now and then and that he should go at his own pace, more or less.
So if Naotas problem was primarily growing up and the awkwardness that comes with being a growing boy going through puberty, then do you think that Hidomi will be in a similar situation?
Or will they mix it up and have Hidomi be a girl who is grown up on the inside but wants to be able to connect to her peers? Maybe a girl who looks up to Haruko as an older sister type role model, someone she wants to become instead of love.
