Am i too dumb or is this movie just a pile of crap
Plot-wise, it's pretty crap.
great animation, music, whatever
its nonsensical though
thats what you get for condensing a 2000 page at that time unfinished manga into a what, 90 minute movie?
Great fun, great visuals, great animation.
>>139321565
Read the manga.
>>139321639
nig i just trashed 2 hours of my time on this shit, tell me a good reason why i should trust akira again.
I agree that animation wise it is a masterpiece, plot wise it's literally worse than your typical no brainer story
>>139321565
Great animation, the story is pretty abstract though. Manga is pretty good though.
>>139321669
They had to condense alot. The story is basically not there in the movie, if you actually want a quality story then read the manga.
This used to be cute, absolutely haram
Read the manga
>>139321669
>I agree that animation wise it is a masterpiece
And now you see why it is heavily praised.
Basically just a ultra violent flick with good production values. That's about it, I don't fucking understand why it's praised so much over things like Satoshi Kon's movies or even Ghibli. I guess Americans really fucking love their gore and shock factors.

It has a really great atmosphere and setting that fitted with the times.
It was amazing for its time, but nowadays it's probaby not that special. It's like when people watch Blade Runner and think it's shit, because all the shit it inveted are commonplace now. The rain-soaked dystopian city, indistinguishable androids hiding among humans etc, the futuristic neo-noir atmosphere etc.
I think it's the same deal with Akira.
>>139321710
>used to
>>139321710
a cute
>>139321669
faggot, the movie is two hours of a manga that spanned six volumes of 600 pages
alot of shit ain't in there
>>139321669
Movie doesn't have a plot, read the manga.
>>139322261
It's praised because even now there is no anime film with better animation than Akira. Only one (possibly partially unreleased) animated movie is better animated.
I think it gets praised because it was the first 'big' anime movie of the west. Same way Ghibli gets praised now by the west since it's the only other thing that gets regularly shown there.
Terrible movie, only good thing is the animation.
>watching it for the plot and not for the scathing criticism of rampant consumption and western capitalistic ideals undoing the fastidious morals and traditions of japanese virtue
>>139321565
Animation has aged incredibly well, but of course you're going to have issues when you try to cram that much plot into a movie which is too short to contain it. Would have been better as a trilogy at the very least, but they weren't into that sort of thing and it was probably impossible at the time.
>>139321565
both
>>139321565
Yes.
>>139324872
You can make anything seem deep after staring at it for too long.
>>139326344
but it's a commonly held interpretation, anon
>>139326499
Sounds like a attempt to justify watching a animated movie to me.
>>139326548
it is
>>139326344
Although you can argue that, it doesn't mean that some things aren't more deep than others.
Imagine looking at the Mona Lisa and saying the same thing.
>>139327126
Sure, but where are talking about a nice looking generic action movie.
>>139327159
*We are
>>139327126
You realize that the only reason the Mona Lisa is as famous as it is is because it was stolen, right?
>>139327159
>Sure, but we're looking at a generic portrait.
>>139327241
The reason for it's popularity doesn't really have anything to do with artistic merit. It took quite a while too.
And it was just an example anon.
>>139321565
Movie makes more sense after some re-watching and manga reading.
Visually it's still probably the best thing I've ever seen. On Blu Ray on a 4K TV in 2016 it blew me away.
And I don't think the 'gore' and 'shock value' was really the point. Consider that they used a lack of censorship over trying to go out of their way to be edgy.
I've only watched the movie. Is wrong for me to have interpreted a criticism of the destructive nature of mankind and its technology (obviously, I'm talking about weapons, mostly nuclear ones) and how we have evolved too far for our own good or am I just reading too much into it?
Akira's plot stands alone perfectly, I have never understood the issue people take with it besides wanton contrarianism.
Man, chapter 16 is when shit really goes down.
I wish someone would adapt the whole manga.
>tetsuo hijacks an american aircraft carrier and accidentally launches a nuke
made me kek
>>139321565
Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Perfect Blue are the most overrated anime films.
>>139331387
Adaptions are almost always worse than the source material.
