Just let people aproach you as human beans and if you see someone who catches your interest go for it. It's not some hunting minigame, it's basic human interaction. You literally just have to offer them a chance to spend time just the two of you in a non romantic way, if she seems to be cool with you you ask her if she's seeing someone and if not you offer her to spend more time with you and see how it goes.
In my experience the best way to go is caring the least possible about the outcome. If it fails it failed, no one will laugh at you for trying to score unless your friends are 8 y/o; and if it works but then she turns out to be shit then you never were fully devoted to making something that doesn't exist work. Just son't put stakes on things and they won't get burned.

This is another problem I have. My older brother exposed me to PUA when I was younger (14). This gave me a skewed perception on women.
