What kind of fucked up shit is this? I've also seen it in other manga, apparently if the parents die the relatives don't give a fuck about the children and just leave them on their own or just treat them like shit? What kind of fucked up society does Japan have?

Tropes exist for a reason anon
Also it's never treated as something outlandish but the norm.
It's for drama, so it's slightly exaggerated, but it's not like it doesn't have a basis in reality. I'm not even japanese, but I was in a similar situation.
And it's completely understandable. Why should people with their own interests have to take care of someone else's kids? Having strangers in your house that you have to spend time on and maybe money on, when prior to that you were comfortable as things were, it's annoying.

So you're saying you would consider your deceased brother/sister kids as strangers? That's an absurd notion where I'm from.

Did they say anything about aunts and uncles? I don't remember.
Don't get me wrong, personally I'd take care of my siblings' children if they died. But I can understand people that wouldn't. Just because there's a connection by blood doesn't mean you know them or should be obligated to take care of them.
