The best way to handle fanservice is to be creative about it. The usual pantyshots and bath episodes are getting stale, wished someone would come up with more ways to show some ass. In general, I love fanservice but I need someone to be creative with it.
As for serious shows, if there's fanservice with no purpose it kinda breaks immersion but isn't necessarily bad all of the time.

I used to be an elitist faggot, and now I just enjoy fan-service for what it is. My only gripe with it is that ecchi shows usually have poor production quality, and they often focus too much on their lackluster plot rather than what people actually watch them for : lewd shit.
That said, I find that fan-service is handled better in light hearted and cute girls doing cute things shows (as wells as battlan shonen). It can work in a more serious setting, but it's usually done in the same way as in every other shows ("Oh no ! Boobies !") wich kinda breaks the immersion.
