Mari Okada constantly makes references to her childhood since she was a loner and no one shared her interests. The reason of this is because there is a record of many of her characters (which share some traits and is often female) refer to the outside world giving us the idea of the unknown and 'real world'. This happened in Black Rock Shooter, Hanasaku Iroha, M3 Sonno Kuroki Hagane, Selector WIXOSS and in a less extent Gundam G-Tekketsu.

She has her moments and she writes good characters and character dialogue. It's just she doesn't know how to make a satisfying ending and she doesn't plan her stories out well enough in advance so they are always disappointing. Some people can overlook her flaws and it's a dealbreaker for others.
Most of her stuff is kind of crappy but most of anime is kind of crappy, so there's that. At the very least she is prolific like you say, and it's fun to roll your eyes at the Okada-isms.

I think what you consider "self-insert" is largely in the eyes of the viewer: if you consider someone "dark" self insert then pretty much every character from m3 qualifies. I don't think there's any tangible way to actually confirm what characters are self-inserts so I wouldn't actually root for this choice.

It went full retarded with the plot towards the ending and ditched sol elements. Some of the pairings felt to come out of the left field with barely foreshadowing. Instead of some well developed drama elements finale was just something bullshit about "missing love" that was introduced like 3 episodes before finale. Timeskip felt unnecessary device that enabled all the previously mentioned elements I disliked. There wasn't that much wrong with the first half.
