I don't think he was a massively complex strategist either, though he could have been capable on the battlefield as a warrior. The book by Jean Benedetti comments that he probably liked pretty straightforward attacks.
Jean de Craon was by far the more clever manipulator, which is what you needed to be in order to survive the court politics of the day.
He's popular in French works too, especially as a contrast with Jeanne, that whole holy pure person/worldly decadent person lead down a bad road type thing. The real Gilles would probably be nothing like the schemer in Bahamut, but Bahamut is loose as fuck with the historical figures they use anyway.

The Jean Benedetti book is worth reading. Georges Bataille did one too, which has the court testimony in full, translated. I found a digital copy of that one online and downloaded it. There's a few various fiction works too.
I need to get some Jeanne books, she's fascinating too. And yeah, the whole villain plot this season has me intrigued so far.

If it were due to their leaders disappearing, then the plot might be down to getting them back, which would connect to Favaro trying to get Amira back.
Maybe Mina is a splinter, a rebirth, or was seeded from Amira's, Bahamut's, Zeus', and Satan's soul (since they should be more or less one now), after all she can turn into a dragon. Maybe once she's fully grown or unlocks her potential or whatever, shit happens, and the Gods and demons get their shit back. It would also make it so the main cast has some opposition to the guys killing angels/gods, since they won't want that and will try to kill Mina.
