You don't need to have plot escalation to be a good series. NNB is actually the pinnacle of that, beyond Aria. You can have a fantastic, nearly perfect anime without it being art, or having any deeper meaning. It's just pure fun, and works perfectly.

Is this cognitive dissonance? If you want to disregard author intent, then you shouldn't have a problem with things that don't have a clear author message. It leaves more room to analysis/interpretation on the part of the viewer.

As far as the second point goes, some aspects of shows or important plot points make no sense, but people try to justify them as deep rather than looking at why they're poorly done. The example I was thinking of was the ending of Schwarzesmarken, whena number of soldiers with varying amounts of medical training didn't know how to administer first aid to a wounded Iris who spent a pretty good amount of time dying in front of them.That show wasn't very good.
