So my friend gave me her Crunchyroll account. I've always wanted to watch pic related so where does one start from in Lupin the Third?
If you've got a CrunchyRoll account then wouldn't it make sense to start with the earliest series they have?
Watch the current season, but due to it's nonchronological nature a newbie like yourself should start at episode 5, then go to 13, then 4 as those will be episodes giving background into the lupin universe.
After that you watch the anime from episodes 1-13 then watch Calistrogo and then resume episodes 14-End.

Start with series 1 (green jacket). it is the best in my opinion and you should always start from the beginning anyway.
Then after you watch all 23 episodes, move onto series 2 {red jacket series) You don't really need to watch the entire thing because there are so many episodes that are just hit or miss, but is still really fun to watch.
Then I'd suggest you watch some of the movies. These are my favorites and are most likely the most important to watch. I don't have crunchyroll so I dont know if they also have movies, but these are what I recommend in this exact order

>Legend of the Gold Babylon
>Fuma Conspiracy
>Missed by a Dollar (optional but I really love this one because of how much of a badass Lupin is in it)

Then you can watch The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, but it is optional. If you don't mind a really dark throwback to 1970's conspiracy thrillers, you may like this. Plus it's only 13 episodes.
Then you should really watch Series 4 (Blue Jacket) It is the most current series and it's amazing.

everyone does it. My preference is Watchcartoononline. Everything I see on there I only plan on watching once anyway, so why bother downloading something. Also if it's a show or movie I really like, I'd just buy the DVD or Blu Ray because I actually like supporting the shit that I love.
What's the catch with this anime? The character designs always look so fresh when I see them. Is it about elaborate, high stakes heists? Why do Lupin fans adore this show?

Because Lupin is single handily the greatest the most entertaining protagonist in the history of anime. He also has the funnest side characters of any other shiw.
Yeah the heists can be pretty hyper sometimes, but the overall appeal is the characters and the interaction between them all. It's just a huge collisions of charisma, comedy, coolness, and other c words.
The art and animation have always been superb no matter what decade it is. The attention to detail and iconic looks of the characters are always refreshing to see. The Castle of Cagliostro film alone was so ahead of it's time for japanese animation, and still looks great compared to brand new animation if not better.
The franchise is just a timeless piece of great entertainment.

I'm halfway through volume 3 of the Lupin III manga, and they finally gave Lupin a distinct look, and got rid of the cleft chin. Also finished the "Flowers for Fujiko chapter. Great story. it's also kinda nice seeing Lupin rape girls every chapter. although he still tries to, and it may go back.
Also apparently I dont have a pic of Volume 3 so here's volume 2.

The characters are extremely simple and their interactions just write themselves, it's like having actors with great chemistry. As long as you keep them on their roles and have a good idea for a plot it's extremely enjoyable to watch.
There are issues that you see in the 2nd and 3rd series where they try to make it interesting by changing the characters and it's just boring to watch. Like the time they revealed Jigen is a crack shoot because of a little mark on his hat, he looses his hat and has to learn to shoot from zero. It's really bad.
The you have movies with the characters being correct but the plot just being nothing and their star power can't save them.
I think no one mentioned it yet since it's not one of the best but I'd really recommend Bye Bye Lady Liberty. It's a 90's movie, a rough time for Lupin, but it's weird and has enough variety in the settings and scenarios to make it worthwhile.

I liked the movie and the style of Fujiko's series. It's interesting that the incarnation with probably most sex since the 70's was directed by a woman. I wouldn't recommend it to someone just starting with Lupin since it's too different from the rest, but I really enjoyed that show.
