A boy falls in love with a girl.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. As a shameless fan of Shinkai's body of work, I will admit that this plot summary sounds quite familiar. I suppose there is something oddly attractive about vicariously experiencing the frustration of not being able to be with someone- and it's interesting that he's come up with so many ways of approaching that theme- but what probably keeps me coming back is amazing sunsets/skies, and attention to detail with light. The focus on light I find makes scenes more immersive and adds so much richness.
He also just seems like such a nice guy. I don't know what it's like to work for him, but there's some sense of geniality that he conveys in interviews, and I also got the same sense when he was at Otakon a few years ago. Somehow that encourages me to support his work. I just can't think of anyone else I've met that gives off the same combination of thoughtfulness and friendliness.

And finally, if you haven't seen "Place promised in our early days" but you have seen 5 cm/s and you like sci-fi, please watch it. I don't know how 5 cm/s became more widely known, as I think that "Place Promised" is much more coherent, has some slightly more justifiable teen angst, has a scene that involves a *nix command line, and has more beautiful sky shots than your brain will know what to do with. I have absolutely no idea why CoMix went with the absurdly dull English release title of "Place promised in our early days" when the translation of the first part of the original Japanese title "kumo no mukou" is the much more intriguing name "Beyond the Clouds". When Shinkai was at Otakon a few years ago and the question of the English release names came up, he said that he didn't have much to do with them- CoMix makes all the decisions there (which is also how we ended up with "Children who chase lost voices from the deep below"- what? That's not an easily marketable name, even if the movie is good). At any rate, particularly if you had a childhood friend with which you ever discussed inventing things, you'll like "Place Promised".
