Somehow after my last rewatch of the buster series with a friend who had never seen it before the build up in Diebuster didn't feel nearly as agonizing. It also helps that Diebuster is stunningly gorgeous to look at. Once both hit around episode 5 though all bets are off. Also this little bit of soundtrack magnificence:

This scene had little impact on me. I was wondering more how humanity even remembered her after 10,000 years had passed. Since we as a race can't even remember things from 1,000 years ago with accuracy. It just breaks the suspension od disbelief. Plus, if 10,000 years had gone by, and we already had warp capabilities, why are people still stuck on Earth?
Plus, they shouldn't have known the exact day she would return since she spent a few hours fighting. At best, there would have been a 500-1000 year window. And that's only if her speed was constant the whole time.

It's not as if history doesn't have periods of rise and fall, even if the future world government was the longest empire in history it couldn't had lasted more than 2000 years. Various scifi writers and theorists have actually stated the opposite might be true. Since we are putting everything onto digital networks, all it would take is one major blast from the sun to wipe all of modern history from the Earth. While stone monuments would still be around.

There are two types of mecha series anon. One focuses on the robots (Gundam, Transformers, etc). The other type focuses on the characters that pilot the mecha (Eva, Escaflowne, Gunbuster, MKR, etc).
Gunbuster is more of a character story that happens to have mecha. 75% of the OAV is a friend/romance drama.
