It sure used to be, maybe not now that multiculturalism has taken over.

American kids and Japanese kids are a completely different demographic.A lot of anime that were disliked in Japan are popular in the USA(Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds and G Gundam) and some series that were popular in Japan are hated in the USA(Gundam Seed/Destiny and Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal).

Saint Seiya Omega would wind up being a modest success at worst in the USA and at best it would be a hit.

Actually one asshole that made a shitty comic with zodiac themes with it (that is most likley a rip-off of Saint Seiya) sued and tried to claim plagiarism on Saint Seiya, delaying the anime from coming out until a judge told him to fuck off, but by the time it was censored and too late to the game.

First time it did delayed the anime from airing in the 90's

2006 was CN trying to get Zodiac Knights 2000 copyright so they could avoid further bullshit, judge denied it since the family kept the rights in anotehr state

2011 sue for 1 billion dollars was to insane that the first judge told them to fuck off before anyone or TOEI could even give a fuck. Only reason we even know about this recent claim was because they bicthed in their family bussiness webpage

I don't know much about this stuff but let me play devil's advocate for a bit. Dude did a comic called Zodiac Knights 2000, and had it copyrighted. Toei then tries to bring to America their own Zodiac Knights afterwards. The original series is called Saint Seiya, and there would likely be no problem if they kept it like that, but they tried to name it Zodiac Knights despite the fact that a comic with a similar name already existed. The anime isn't even about the zodiac knights either, it's about the bronze ones. So they're hurting his ability to sell merchandise like shirts, toys, etc. of his own comic because they decided to rename their anime for no reason. It's like if Americans tried to air a Superman cartoon in Japan calling it Dragon Ball X and got sued for resembling Dragon Ball Z too much, like, ok you were first and the original, but why take that name?
>>
Why lion is always the best Knight?
>>
>>139249153
Except they would sue for trademark(the name) not copyright(the content).
>>
>>139249153
>>139249262

that's because Saint Seiya has a very religious tone for a name, specially if you are releasing it in America where they still censor any religious tones. So they went with how Spain called it "Los Caballeros del Zodiaco" (Knights of the Zodiac). There is some relevance to the zodiac since the most important arc was about the 12 zodiac houses
>>
it was a success in south america and many European country's, I think it just came out too late in the U.S
>>
>>139249228
Leo a shit.
>>
>>139238255
Because not enough mexicans in US at the time.
>>
>>139249298
I know, even in Italy was "Cavalieri dello Zodiaco" on TV.

But, again, one would sue for trademark as in "we already got the name, take another or pay us"

They sued for copyright as in "you copied our product, not only the name but the content"

While a trademark sue might had ground, the copyright one was completely ridiculous
>>
>>139249392
yeah lets not forget how mexicans made dragon ball z popular here too
>>
>>139249415
well, some people are greedy and naive, but seeing the concept of the american comic, doesn't even look closely except for the name which was probably a coincidence.

>>139249484
Sailor Moon was also a big thing in Mexico but you know, it was for girls so no boy openly admitted to watched it. and Digimon is also popular because we had the unaltered version
>>

>>
>>139249262
>>139249415
I see, but either way it's pretty shitty for the dude. You make a comic and then suddenly a foreign company comes to your country with an older series with a similar concept, and you know already you have no hopes of making it big but now you're fighting against a similar thing but from a big corporation with a way bigger budget and it's certain you're gonna be overshadowed. In his place I would have done the same.
>>
so which manga series is the best? is it original one?
>>
>>139249913
>it had a small cult following but not much more. I wonder if all that teamwork is compatible with American individualism
I don't see that theme of teamwork that the article says so far. Most fights in SS are 1 vs 1, sure there are some moments where they help someone else in a fight, but how is that different from Goku saving some Z fighter another time?
>>
>>139241354
Holy shit my sides.
>>
>>139250262
Dunno what they're smoking either. What it does better than Dragon Ball is giving everyone a fight against a competent opponent, instead of having everyone fight fodder like saibamen or Cell Jrs while the main character takes on the main villain.
>>
>>139249990
again, he could either:

A. ride the wave of the success. It might have been free advertising.

B. sue about the name, either gaining money for the use of the name or them changing the name avoiding confusion.

You don't fucking sue for COPYRIGHT.

I liked the second season better than the first season to be honest.

The main problem I had with Omega was that it seemed like the writers played it safe with the main cast. The only Bronze Saints I cared about were Eden and Subaru.Everyone else was boring.

The writers should have brought back the Fab 5 near the end of the second season, not during the middle of it.
>>
>>139252477

Rushed since Xros Wars S2 (that was one of the worst decisions ever) got cancelled and they had to rush this, originally it was going to have a more classic look

You just ignore all the school parts and the ninja stuff, they have no relevancy at all once the school is detroyed, after that's it's just SS really.

>>139252625
S2 main problem is that they changed writers, as you said.

Also it was a last minute decision just to keep something airing since they had to keep delaying some more Sailor Moon Crystal. S2 was not planned at all and it was still decent to be honest, and gave us the best Taurus Saint of the franchise

Just like S1 was rushed because they ahd just delayed Sailor Moon C and Xros Wars 2 got canned

Well, at the time he was closing the series, there weren't plans to continue... so it worked as finale.

Also, Omega S1 did know perfectly what it wanted to be.
Sure, yet another 12 Houses arc was not the most innovative idea ever, but Japanese like it.

Also, it was still interesting because most Gold Saints had wildly different characters from the classic ones, unlike those in Next Dimension

Except for having been a "bad guy", Harbinger was the same as what the original main character were supposed to be:

The Big 3 was always a Western idea anyway, and those 3 were certainly bigger than anything else at the time. One Piece is in such a league of it's own in popularity that it shouldn't even be grouped with anything else.

>Also, Omega S1 did know perfectly what it wanted to be.
Also this

Yeah it knew perfectly what it wanted to be

That's why they said the cloths no longer had objects when Shun showed up so Libra showed up in object form when Shiryu showed up

That's also why they bothered to go in backstory and flashbacks for some gold saints and others not

That's also why they introduced the school and dropped it like a rock as well as all the elemental BS

Son, even a staffer (Inoue) said the plans kept changing wildly and it was originally conceived as your usual "school life with super powers" kind of story and then it turned into a weird version of the Sanctuary arc from the classic series.

S1 was just completely ADHD jumping from spot to spot frantically, throwing crap at the well hoping it stick and then either just not following it up whatsoever or contradicting it whenever needed.

>>139254468
Just compare it to the whole start/Silver Saint run, the ratings were stronger at that point. SSO was doing well enough ratings wise but STAIRS again managed to somehow lower the show's overall condition.

I think the main problem is that they offered not only a butchered dub but aired it at 7 PM when the older, slightly more informed kids were awake.

Didn't it release at a point in time when anime was on the decline in terms of a dedicated block? I recall around this time Toonami was beginning to get shittier, before it got moved to Saturday evenings only and mostly began airing the usual shounen fare like Naruto. Seems to me even a more faithful adaptation would not have done all that well.

Now with Toonami as a late night block, it could conceivably run completely unedited, though to be honest it very well might not be the kind of show that the current Toonami crowd would actually like. Keep in mind, it IS intended for kids and teens. Blame it on the fact that the US is heads-on-pants retarded about sheltering kids that only a late night block would be acceptable for airing it uncensored.

Not so much took it away as much as recolored it blue or green and said it was Mystical Energy or sweat, depending on the mood of the writer.

Also the script for the "late" parts of the DiC dub (they got so far [and tried so hard] they made it to THE END OF THE IKKI ARC) literally has them just shoving jokes everywhere and does a better job of an "abridged" parody than most abridged parodies.

Don't take my word for it, see for yourselves.

This was when they were experimenting with the Saturday Video Entertainment System block that went nowhere as they couldn't pick a schedule and stick with it.

Bad timing, Kurumada's style and that animation reeks of 80's anime. It was just a time of big jumps in quality and style. It's like Trigun and CowBe airing on the same year but one of them looks post 2000's because it's digitally colored while the other looks 90's.

It's also an extremely basic shonen series that follows every trick in the publisher's book making it stand out very little when the market is exploding.

SS problem here was basically toooo late. had it aired on the 90s at least, it would have been a great success imo.
>>
>>139259859
The problem, again, is that it's a show with too much graphical content by American standards, especially for the 90's and the moral guardians of the day, coupled with very base shonen themes that only kids and preteens could really get behind (and lets be honest, most of its fans are fans only because they grew up with it). DBZ may be violent and similarly base, but graphically it was quite tame for the most part, and what little was considered to be too much for kids only required minor editing. No way around the literal pools of blood the Saints regularly find themselves producing. It's pretty much THE antithesis of American cartoon standards in the 90's.

Saint Seiya is Sadomasochism, The animated series. Everything is about how much pain the characters endure and the emotional impact it left on the audience. Saint Seiya compensate its many flaws with raw manly feelings so it needs the ultraviolence and numerous deaths
>>

this
even with all that free fujobait the original series was way more manlier than omega
>>
>>139255418
I sincerely think that LC is a better "pequel" than ND, ND biggest sin is not knowing what the fuck to do next, Kurumada just had to let Gold Saints go for good here and enter Zeus arc, at this point I doubt we will ever see any kind of Olympian stuff

Also get his lazy ass to make a design to all and every single one of the constellations so spinoffs are not scared to have more variation.
>>
>>139256094
To be fair, even up to today pretty much everyone but diehard nostalgiafans ignore all the beggining with the black saints bullshit and moves directly from the galactic tournament to the appearance of the first Silver Saint, or the Gold saints since the firsts ilver saint is so FABULOUS that some people get tunred off

They are when it comes to cartoons aimed at kids. It was much worse in the 80's and early 90's, though. They can pretty much get away with almost unedited DB and DBZ nowadays, bar the nudity and maaaaaybe Roshi's extreme lechery. Saint Seiya would still be a no-go today except on Toonami.
>>
>>139238255
I think it just came too late. In all countries where Saint Seiya was big it also came before DBZ, not years after Z.
>>
>>139268344
back then they used to held conventions for tv broadcasters and distributor, where japanese studios showcased their series so they could get the rights, dub them, etc
usually they shown a 5mins clips with 5-6 series in them and then the western companies decide if get them or not

t. my dad used to work for a regional distribution company

the SS case in USA must be product of those clips, DiC brought it thinking they could chop every blood drop out of SS and still get a watchable series
>>
>>139269258
Personally I think it was a push from Toei too. The Hades Sanctuary OVAs were JUST coming out as the series was suddenly being tested in the US market.
>>
>>139269821
you got it backwards
Hades came into production after some french otaku did a SS short film with shitty animation "adapting" that arc, european fans become crazy and were starving for this come in a full release
Toei saw this and started production shortly after, then they tried to shoehorn the series into the USA
>>
>>139269982
Uh

Toei decides they're going to revive the series (regardless if the short animation had any impact or not) -> OVAs begin to come out -> They decided to try their luck in the USA

Don't know what's backwards there.
>>
>>139269982
>>139270184
Also anime actually becoming somewhat big in early 2000 afetr DBZ and Pokemon hit. That ended in U.S. killing anime in Latinoamerica by cockblocking direct japanese licensing frome here
>>
>>139270184
>regardless if the short animation had any impact or not
it was BIG, at that time youtube wasnt even a thing, still the short film fled into the web across the world; was top download on p2p software of that time, like kazaa and such

anon said they made Hades because they wanted to make it into the US market, but they wanted to get SS into USA because they had a worldwide hit in their hands (minus USA)

>>139270287
blame FUNI and other american distributors
anime got killed in latinamerica and europe because they cockblocked them getting worldwide rights for DBZ, OP and Naruto, their horrid adaptations, rewrites and changes in OST killed anime for the rest of us

I think Latinamerica was safe since they got righst up to GT and most stuff was utouched up to 2003 or so we got Digimon Frontier untouched as well as Shaman King before that, so a uncesored version exists, somewhere and was aired.
