Because the first 15 or so episodes are garbage with the exception of the "sniping ayyliens" one(5 I think, when Rei smiles). Then there's that dancing filler episode.

No. Its kind of annoying the lame "Shinji get in teh robot" scenes but the anime is still good, and instead of having plot twists it had GENRE twists.
First the main theme is psychological, then with asuka introduction its comedy, then with Kagi and his triple agent-ness its mistery and finally we go back to psychological, but in a much more messed up and depressed way.
