Because they want freedom in their storytelling. LNs give you tons of freedom to choose how to represent them, since they're just words, and so do 4koma where the composition is usually dull/repetitive and anything could be happening "off-screen" without disrupting the flow/atmosphere. Most good "serious" manga are sets of deliberately chosen/arranged still images that use a completely different visual language from the kind KyoAni's directors use.
