I was listening to an automotive podcast the other day were they were talking about making a car movie. F&F aren't really about cars any more, and the Gone in Sixty Seconds remake was the last car movie to make a profit, and it barely did that. Otherwise, all car movies bomb because young people don't really care about cars any more. Initial D is perfect in that it throws back to the mid 90's, a time that everyone is nostalgic about right now, where driving and the car still mattered to the youth. A story about a kid with no real motivation or goal, or interest in cars for that matter (something most people could relate to) enters a street race over a bet with his Dad. If he wins, he gets the car for the day and a full tank of gas so he can take his crush to the beach on a date. He wins, he gets the girl, he develops some kind of emotion towards cars and driving and sets up the next opponent. You could make a nice trilogy around the first season.

Really depends on the kind of movie they want to adapt, the big explosive blockbusters are pretty hard to move into successfully.
But a lot of Manga/Anime series would lend themselves to a lo-fi indie film.
