every time

same goes for that one retard that replied to the makami post last thread
>>
>>139193765
Hostility and elitism is perfectly fine but only when it's directed at the right things.

Your pathetic whining couldn't get imouto banned by the mods, so you resorted to making it awkward for him by spamming all of his posts with autistic arguments and derailing threads. You got what you wanted, he stopped "avatarfagging", probably because he didn't want to be a catalyst for your autistic outbursts, so you can stop now. The only reason I can think of for you continuing is if it wasn't about "avatarfagging" from the start, but an intense jealousy of someone being better at you at Japanese.

Your behaviour is both childish and pathetic. I suggest you take a long hard look in the mirror and reflect on your actions.
>>
>>139193970
I'll stop pretty soon if he doesn't start doing it again.
>intense jealousy
Yeah, that's the deal. You got me there.
>>
>>139194091
He hasn't done it in two threads.
>>
>>139193970
I usually read imouto's posts because I usually learned something useful from it (unless it was an offtopic shitpost), so him not avatarfagging makes his posts a bit harder to find. Would be nice if he'd at least put a trip on so people who don't like him can filter him and people who do like him can find his posts a lot easier.
>>
>away from DJT for a few weeks
>come back
>some autist constantly hating on glorious imouto
Whoever you are just wanted to tell you you're a faggot.
>>
>>139194128
And I hope it stays that way.
>>139194146
If you really want to find his posts you still can do that. There's no need for trips, he will just continue his roleplaying.

So can we move on now?
>>
>>139194279
He's a native of the language we're learning and answers questions constantly. That's probably the only case in this thread where a trip is useful or even warranted so long as he's only using it for useful posts. It leaves pretty much no room for doubt when reading an answer.

Finding his posts manually is a lot more tedious because people shitpost in Japanese fairly often. It's not something I can see just quickly scrolling through the posts I missed and I don't want to read every single Japanese post on the off-chance it could be one of his.
>>
>>139194146
The rules are a guideline. They aren't absolute. Everyone on this site would be banned for flaming and trolling if the mods really had to follow the rules exactly.

The point of avatarfagging being a bannable offence is to prevent retarded blogging. Does imouto use avatar status to blog? Not more than any anonymous poster. And he's not banned yet, despite the fact that this idiot has probably spammed hundreds of reports on him.

The worst and most childish part about this guy is that he's decided to take matters into his own hands and actively try to make imouto feel unwelcome by spamming the thread and derailing it. And if that isn't rule breaking behaviour I don't know what is.

Now he's trying to play it down, just look

Asked this on the last thread, wanting to see if I can get more answer now.

Anybody here regularly visit 2ch and 2chan? Can I ask how to be able to make a post there from non-japan IP? I want to start practicing my production skill through conversations.

Also, where can I download VN games if it's not available on nyaa?
Esp. Vita games

Also, can anybody open this link about J-J dictionary? I can't seem to open it.

As someone who barely spends any time on DJT, coming back briefly to see arguments like this going on, and having no investment in them, really helps to see how flippin' ridiculous they are. It seems the problem with generals is that people make them their home, and want to direct the atmospher and kind of posts that aught to be posted in their home, when in truth the best course of action is to ignore people you don't like and close threads you don't like. Food for thought: If DJT drama ever gets thick, and perhaps you're in the midst of it, try leaving DJT. It's not your home. If you spend every waking hour on here, perhaps with auto refresh, try closing the tab for a couple days. It'll whip you out of this sick controlling mindset, I guarantee it.

>>
>>139195736
>But they start at 10 each
I don't know the context of course. But yes, they obviously start at 10 when the game starts. But they have to choose those 10 players. If you have a club with 50 people and can only send 10 to the championships you gotta restrict down to 10 people.

>there's only one real turbobutthurt fag here though
Nope, I don't even really care.

But it's not like they don't do the same shit to us when we go to their English learning boards on 2channel. They basically have a "chat in english" containment thread.

I'd like to have natives using this thread but that doesn't mean they get special treatment and can _violate global rule #2 by avatarfagging_ with every post and being a namefag on top of it.
>>
>>139195807
No, there's 10 on the field, and the announcer says the original line I posted right before the game starts, it's one where they have to disable the other team's players. I still don't know what 最も is meant to imply with certainty but I can at least say しぼる is not meaning that there.

I am quite glad to announce that, as of now, the new guide has been implemented.

It is currently still open to comments, I'll keep it like that for another week or two before closing it finally. Of course I'll always be glad to receive your feedback via the feedback form or via email. Or in the thread if I'm around.

The older versions of the guide are still available, you can find them linked at the bottom of the document.

For those to whom this whole business is total news, here's a quick rundown of the changes:

-less wordy, more compact and straightforward
-resources section has been moved to a separate document
-Section on learning Kanji is more extensive and (hopefully) less biased towards mnemonic methods
-some minor additions to the FAQ and the Misc. section

Happy learning

People who think with emotions and people who think with logic always clash.

I have nothing against imouto and personally hope he still comes here.

Like c'mon. OK a dude is shitting on another dude. Who cares. Were this a normal thread, that behaviour would be ignored and then the thread would die. Instead, it seems that guy is spending a huge chunk of his time on this particular thread, and trying to make it his home, and trying to control how people act or at least ranting about how people. Thats not a good idea in my opinion. It's best not to make DJT your home and take it so seriously. It's not a good idea to spend so much time here and make it a huge part of your life. It's really best to close the thread a lot and not make the place your home. It's not healthy nor is it a good use of time. This is a thread on 4chan and its best not to let it exceed that in yourself or to let it dominate a huge chunk of your time.

I guess I'm being hypocritical here, trying to dictate how people act, but really I'm just trying to give some advice. If he disagrees and wants to make DJT his home thats okay, I won't be pissed and rant about it, especially since I wont be here to see him ranting because I only come here so infrequently. In fact I just came back to see if anyone made a crying reaction image to "DJT is not your home". I know that hit me hard when I typed it because I spent over a year reading every post on the thread and contributing. But thats in the past. DJT wasn't my home but I thought it was. I don't want other people making the same mistake. But it's ok if they do.

>and the benefits that learning kanji would bring in vocabulary retention will take longer to achieve, if gotten.

Let me modify this just a tiny bit to make it clear how it comes across

>and the benefits that learning kanji would bring in vocabulary retention will take longer to achieve, if gotten at all

In other words

>Learning kanji individually brings benefits in terms of learning vocabulary. If you learn kanji through vocabulary, it may take a while to get enough of a knowledge of kanji that you can make use of those same benefits. Or worse, you may never achieve that level.

Does that make it clearer?

>shouldn't be talking shit.
I'm pretty sure you're the only one talking shit here.
>>
>>139196404
Will do. Thanks for having me.

>>139196531
You mean against learning kanji through vocab? I agree that it may appear biased, but it is indeed the case that learning Kanji individually will oftentimes give a huge boost to your vocabulary retention (in my case it went from 60-70% to a solid 95%). I hope that it's clear that this takes lots of time, and that it may not be worth it for everyone. If you have a better formulation to express this I'd be glad to implement it. Let me know or best leave a comment in the guide.
>>
>>139197329
>If you learn kanji through vocabulary, it may take a while to get enough of a knowledge of kanji that you can make use of those same benefits. Or worse, you may never achieve that level.
You broke context. The section of text is about "learning kanji giving benefits to vocabulary retention", not "learning kanji through vocab giving benefits to vocabulary retention". "If gotten at all" applies to "benefits to vocabulary retention in general", not "benefits to vocabulary retention from learning kanji through vocab". It's a non-sequitur for it to apply solely to via-vocab because there is no logic or tone present for such a connection.

>I'm pretty sure you're the only one talking shit here.

Take: >it definitely doesn't sound like that.
>>
>>139197377
>I agree that it may appear biased, because I am biased
I see. Anyway, my main beef was with your implication that you may not ever achieve those benefits if you learn kanji through vocab, which is just false. People who learn kanji through vocab still learn kanji nonetheless. They can see a kanji and name off words that contain that kanji. At that point the only real difference they have with people who learn kanji individually is writing. I would also personally suggest mentioning that doing a little bit of radical study and/or individual kanji study (without necessarily learning all ~2500 Jouyou) may allow people to get a decent amount of the retention benefits from being comfortable with kanji while enabling a more vocab-centric method of study.
>>

- Tl;dr of my 2nd feedback to you is this, I think it would be beneficial for newcomers if you write somewhere on the guide about Tae Kim that Tae Kim himself said that his guide are meant as a supplement.

Or at very least, write that if learners found Tae Kim's Basic Grammar Section to be confusing, read other books instead, before coming back to Tae Kim's Essential, Special, and Advanced section.

--
The long story is this, I've bought Tae Kim's book and read it while idling on DJT even though I've completely learned fundamentals previously. Initially I did it without ever looking at his homepage. I did read some of his entries, but never his hompage.

Personally, I think his Chapter 3: Basic Grammar section was way too simplified, and some entries on that chapter, like the の particle table, he doesn't explain anywhere near enough.

He just made that table about 飲まないんだ・飲むんじゃない・飲むんじゃなかった and was done with it. That was jarring and nowhere near enough explanation.

I then look at his website and found this written there

>If you are taking Japanese classes and you want to get a better understanding of how things work, the Guide to Japanese Grammar is designed to supplement your studies

>supplement

I didn't learn fundamentals through genki either, but I've check out a couple pages of genki. Also check out a couple pages of minna no nihongo.

- My opinion is that I think you should put an asterisk that Tae kim himself said that the guide was meant as a supplement. Or at least write somewhere that if Tae Kim's Basic Grammar Section is confusing to you, then read some other books before going back to Tae Kim. His Essential, Special, and Advanced section is pretty concise and adequate. So there's that.

>I agree that it may appear biased, because I am biased
I can't really deny that given my personal experience with the matter.

How does this sound?

>By learning Kanji through vocabulary, you will not learn individual kanji in isolation, and will instead learn entire words -- which are to a large extent composed of kanji. The drawback to this method is that you will very likely not gain the ability to write words or kanji from memory, unless you actively practice this alongside your vocabulary study.
You will still become familiar with individual kanji since they often recur in various words and hence you will most likely also be able to recognize kanji that you have encountered before in new words and even guess their readings correctly (sometimes, readings of individual kanji and kanji in words are highly variable). Studying radicals of kanji (as mentioned above) may also be beneficial to vocab retention. While not as strong as when learning kanji individually, studying radicals may still help you with kanji recognition and retention and thus also grant some benefits to vocabulary retention.

Since many learners have no interest in being able to write Japanese by hand, and just wish to read. Since it is entirely possible to read Japanese without having studied individual kanji, and just learning words instead, there exists a trade-off in terms of spending more time on kanji and less time on vocabulary early on in return for better retention later.

>>139197722

Pointing something out doesn't mean I think you don't know it, anon. Work on your reading comprehension.

Sounds fine. My biggest beef is just that the sentence
>You will still become familiar with individual kanji since they often recur in various words and hence you will most likely also be able to recognize kanji that you have encountered before in new words and even guess their readings correctly (sometimes, readings of individual kanji and kanji in words are highly variable)
just kinda sounds awkward. I would just take out the part about readings. Guessing readings as a skill is something you have to pick up with experience no matter how you learn kanji since readings are so unreliable. So there's no real reason to specifically mention it in the learning through vocab section.

One last thing, the Dictionaries section of the Lookup Resources is a bit lacking on J-J dictionary entries.

You might want to see if you want to add that or not. I know some people here use kotobank for online J-J dict. I often use sanseido.

J-J dictionary in order of authoritativeness is Koujien, then everything else. Daijirin is popular, so does Daijisen.

Did you (and everybody) managed to see that or was it just written as "edited by anonymous" at your end? I just prefer to be anonymous is all. Was that too late because I stupidly pressed spacebar?

I've gotten to the point where I know hiragana and katakana well enough so I'm studying Genki 1 (with removed romaji). Should I load up the core anki deck and study that alongside it (I was thinking about 30 words a day)? I'm asking because Genki has vocabularies it wants you to learn after each exercise so maybe having too much vocabulary may be a bad thing.
>>
>>139200852
You have impaired short term memory.

Set your new card graduation interval to two days. Set your new card steps to the default (1 10).

Set the lapse minimum interval to 1 days. Set the lapse new interval to 10%. (This way lapsing mature cards reverts them by 2~3 Goods, not resetting them to 1 day instantly) Set lapse steps to (10). Note the lack of 1. This makes it so that lapsing a new card and lapsing a rep after it, the new cards always come first, unless you go 10 minutes without finishing your new cards.

Go into preferences. Go to "Basic" tab. Select the second dropdown and set it to "Show new cards before reviews".

These settings will reduce the load that SRS has on your short term memory without affecting how SRS behaves in the long term.

Even if you dislike the two day interval for graduated new cards, do it anyway. It cuts the number of reps you do for cards that you've never gotten right in half without affecting cards you've gotten right at least once. If you really dislike it, instead of ignoring it and using a one day interval for graduated new cards, study your new cards a day in advance instead. Note that if you study new cards a day ahead like this, it shouldn't be in the flash card format, so it might be a little inconvenient but you'll have to make a filtered custom study deck and study it via the card browser.
>>
>>139202383
>It cuts the number of reps you do for cards that you've never gotten right in half without affecting cards you've gotten right at least once.
Sorry, I got this backwards. It cuts the number of reps you do for cards you've never gotten wrong in half without affecting cards that you've lapsed at least once. This way your short term memory problems do less to cards that you're doing fine on.

What does the "shi" mean that Koiwai uses?
>>
>>139205942
not him, but they can work that way. i've had surprisingly arbitrary mnemonics work. as long as i just assign some personal meaning to the word they become easier to recall.

indicates a reason, aka go read tae kim.

It's a sentence ending particle.
>A conjunction to indicate ‘and’ in an emphatic way.
>And what’s more; not only~but also~; so

I want to learn kanji but I still don't know how to approach it

for those who learnt using RTK and are say, advanced in their studies, when you read, how do you do it in your mind. is kanji so common now that your mind already knows the meaning of the word in the sentence or does your brain go

kanji---->story made for remembering the kanji--->word

sorry of it seems an stupid question
>>

Ahh, I think I understand. I'm looking at DoJG, and it says "and, what's more, but also" and all the examples make it seem like it's used as "blahblah....and in addition...this."
(今日はテニスもしたし映画も見た)
I was wondering where the "this" was in Koiwai's sentence, or if he was just trailing off like, "Jimbo can you do the work of two people and....."

No you don't.

kanji->mnemonic->english translation->japanese meaning->word

Takes me about 5-10 second to process each kanji. Compound words are a bitch
>>

The story is mostly just there as an initial anchor. It'll fade over time (don't force it to fade out though) but the general concept you have in your mind about it should stay enough that you still know what it means and have no issues distinguishing it from similar looking ones or knowing what it "means" (as long as you learn vocab containing those kanji).

It's kind of like translating to English in your head when you first start reading. Eventually it becomes easier and faster to just read it in Japanese and not really try to parse and translate it in English terms, especially for trickier grammar that's hard to translate literally. Sort of the same thing here.

Learn Chinese first, then Kanji will be easy.

I don't think you use に like that usually. It'd be 俺もわかるし
