Was pretty disappointed by it. Never read the light novel, a friend told me it was basically a david versus goliath where the MC uses cool strategies to beat the big bads. Watched it, 90% of everything was incredibly contrived and the script was awful.

Give it time. Early HO anime was subpar due to it being based on the first volume. By the time the second cour finished, it got good enough that we have newcomers to the series asking for a possible second season and asking where to find the HO LNs. And with an incredible ending, if the LN does suddenly increased in sales, then we might get a good chance of a second season.

I've been missing most of the threads, and the few that I did catch were mostly just people talking about sections of the LN that will now never be adapted, so I didn't really participate.
Also I convinced a fair number of people to try it and they've all come back and said it was abjectly terrible, even after they broke the 3 episode barrier which I will freely admit was a bit shit.
You just don't get stuff like this show fucking ever. Like, all the potential of the Aldnoah Zero fights but actually realised. And the fanservice, for all that I normally dislike such things, was well, beyond merely inventive.

Index is actually pretty good when it comes to picking it up where it left off. You miss very little over the course of the first 12 volumes.
If you do get around to it, start at volume 13 (the last arc of index II) and SS1 (the last two episodes) and go on from there, it's a wild ride.
