did the author ever learn anatomy?
>>

He learned a form of anatomy unknown to regular humanity

Is there an actual reason for the mango being so grotesque or did the author just have no idea what he was doing?

So Pickle thinks Musashit is a dinosaur now.

I had really hoped there'd be a real fight but it's just Musashit doing imaginary slashes and shit.

The Hanmas aren't even Japanese. Yuujiro and Yuichiro are, but we have no idea on where they came from before that, beyond Egypt at some point prior.

Musashi, on the other hand, is just there because he's such a powerful and significant figure in Japanese culture. Imagine an American comic with Jack Dempsey returning to squash modern boxers or something - that's basically the equivalent.

Itagaki has got real good over time and it's one of those artists who can really boast a unique style.

His coloring skills alone are a sight to behold, he's got a real weird style, but after a few volumes you can see that it's actually a carefully developed and very expressive one.

Not to mention that you can really distinguish all of his characters, which is a big plus in my book, it's useless to be as technically and theorethically good as a Murata when you only have three stock faces, or at least that's how I see it, with due respect to all the Muratas out there, but again, Itagaki is in his own league.

Now now, we like to joke about it but Memetobe was really always implied to be a big deal, it's just that he didn't get much time to shine until now, I blame Itagaki for not planning his characters too much, back in the first series it was all about Doppo, than Yujiro, than Hanayama, and the Maxim Tournament with Retsu, Gouki and Jack, Memetobe was there in the sidelines to provide exposition, but it was the rest of the cast that actually showed how good they were directly, then Son of Ogre introduced a whole load of other characters, some of which disappeared with no reason, like Jyaku, which wa a huge waste by the way, and still Memetobe was absent for 90% of the series but at least he DID fight Yanagi and showed he wasn't a pushover like many people thought. Now he's finally getting his very own character arc, which memes and bullshit aside was very much due.
>>
Memes and trolling aside, what exactly does he want to accomplish by preventing people from fighting Musashi? Even if, say, Musashi was capable of killing Yujiro, how is anyone (other than Yujiro) worse off because of that?

>Now he's finally getting his very own character arc, which memes and bullshit aside was very much due.
Agreed. It felt like he was supposed to be important in series 1, but Itagaki wanted to elongate the childhood arc and hence didn't have time for anything involving him. Christ Almighty, the childhood arc is long.

I don't think that was idea. Yujiro beat him in 2 pages, and then Baki was supposed to fight Motobe's disciple who was even more awesome than him, and that guy just ended up jobbing to Mount Toba offscreen.

But remember - beyond the "I could kill you in less than a minute" thing, he also said he was able to see attacks of Yuujiro's that he couldn't before, indicating he'd fought Yuujiro before and was weaker then. He also did the weird trick where he pulled 5 people into submission when he was surrounded. Being completely sidelined after the childhood arc must have been something done because Itagaki didn't have the time to give the exposition to the character that he wanted.

>what exactly does he want to accomplish by preventing people from fighting Musashi?
He wants to protect people from Musashi by trolling them to near death, true story.
No really, he's doing all this because he wants to "protect them", because none of the big name grapplers are used to weapon warfare, much less to the "ancient" way of weapons, at least that's how the man himself puts it.

So basically it turned out that Motobe is versed in ancient ninja techniques because reasons and all his fame as aikido/ju jitsu master wasn't his real deal and field of expertise.

In a way it's interesting because as it was implied during the Escaped Convicts arc there's some kind of theory that Itagaki was pushing, that is that Grapplers are often limited by the world of martial arts and are often at odds with weapons, most of the convicts used in fact, weaponry of various kinds, Speck used bullets, Doyle used concealed blades and explosives, Yanagi used blades and poisons, Dorian used everything from glass shards to grenades, titanium wires and even gasoline, and the grapplers had it real hard in the beginning, because they weren't used to such methods of fighting, Doppo lost its hand and got burned badly, same with everyone in his Dojo, Doyle managed to slightly injure Oliva of all people and get away with it, Yanagi got a few draws with Gouki and Baki and Speck vs Hanayama was a real close call and a rollercoaster of a fight.

But while Escaped Convicts had an overall air of contempt towards weapon users (even Strydum tells Doyle that he didn't win honorably against Shinogi because he used "tricks") the present arc is basically the contrary, this time weapon users aka Muh Sashit and Memetobe are the big boys, all the other grapplers except Yuujiro are eating dirt.

>>139146501
>Doyle managed to slightly injure Oliva of all people and get away with it
Motherfucker was almost bleeding out, it was way more than a slight injury.

The thing is that none of the convicts were weapons *experts* except for Yanagi, who got fucked by Motobe. Speck just picked up a random gun + bullets, Doyle was more-or-less just an assassin and hence wasn't a genius with his blades, Dorian didn't show any favor to a weapon other than the wire - which he deliberately discarded in the end anyway, and Sikorsky only really used his fingers.

Musashi (and Motobe, apparently) almost invariably fight with only weapons, but both are still masters of martial arts, for cases wherein they don't have weapons. That familiarity with their weapons gives pause to the other fighters because they themselves are not masters of that/those specific art(s). Retsu had never been "cut" with a sword until he died: he didn't *know* what a sword could do, and was not as careful as he could have been. The same goes for the other fighters; Motobe wrecking them clues them in on the idea that they might be missing something important.
>>
>>139146501
>So basically it turned out that Motobe is versed in ancient ninja techniques because reasons and all his fame as aikido/ju jitsu master wasn't his real deal and field of expertise.

The ninja shit is new to us but he did say in his fight with Yanagi that he had moved on to real combat, actual weapons for war.

>The thing is that none of the convicts were weapons *experts* except for Yanagi
And that's exactly why they couldn't win in the long run, or at least that's how I see it, same thing that Strydum said to Doyle, he was just using "tricks" that wouldn't have helped him in a fight with someone that would have been more skilled than him, and that's exactly what happened to him when he met Retsu.
They did "win" the first rounds, at least, Dorian and Doyle did, mostly because the grapplers needed to adapt to the unusual way of fighting, but once they did adapt, especially Doppo going into fighting nirvana, they didn't stand a chance.
Now, Motobe and Musashi are actually as good with weapons as grapplers are with martial arts, but the difference is that both Motobe and Musashi actually know quite a bit about martial arts while none of the grapplers except Yuujiro knew nothing about "ancient warfare".
>Motobe wrecking them clues them in on the idea that they might be missing something important.
And that's the same thing grandpa Tokugawa says to Jack, he wouldn't have been able to win against Motobe because despite being tremendously stronger he lacked basic knowledge about fighting with and against weapons.
>>139147322
>he did say in his fight with Yanagi that he had moved on to real combat, actual weapons for war.

Gaia's mysterious as heck and I don't think it would be awful to reveal some of what he did (whereas revealing anything indepth about Yujiro on the battlefield past what has been said would be an awful idea)
>>
>>139149065
Yeah, I guess I can see how some Gaia warfare chapters could be pretty awesome. Problem is that Itagaki isn't really trained/experienced in drawing guns and gunfights, is he? It doesn't quite fit the old Japanese ukiyo-e aesthetic, does it? I mean, look at this shit. I don't think I'd be able to take it seriously if it looked like an Itagaki variant of this.

Itagaki doesn't draw most of the gaidens, he just writes them. And to be honest I find that to be a bit suspect and he's more than likely just a supervisor to the artists and gives an ok or nay on whether what they want to make fits with Baki canon

Also I doubt any of Itagaki's assistants are experience in guns either and I am also pretty sure the gaiden artists are current or former assistants to draw in a similar style. It would be risky to bring in an 'outsider' if you will to draw guns and stuff. Even more when there are no artists like that in Japan of note, war comics with guns blazing are more of an american thing

>You think Kaiji's narrator would do a good job with Itagaki's pseudoscience?
You mean Fumihiko Tachiki? I don't know, he seems a bit too over the top for Baki, I think Furuya Tooru, who also did Akagi's Narrator would be better for something so exotic as Baki.
I really, really liked him when he narrated Akagi playing against Washizu, I feel it's something that could work very well with Itagaki's weird pseudoscience.

Okay, but that doesn't mean they're active now, or even active on Baki. He asked for Garouden help.

I have yet to see anything that indicates they're still doing Grappler Baki besides that one guy's word above. Not even vk has these chapters that he's mentioning, which tells me he is a Wild Fang subscriber or whatever, Ichido being a snarky rat, or lying. If he is a Wild Fang subscriber and isn't giving out whatever scans he has, he's a fag. In all seriousness, we're just doing it for completion/so people can read all the way through. Our pro translator doesn't even work on it, he just does Dou. If they're significantly farther along than us and still going, it might be grounds to find someone to leak it and then take it from where they are now, or just stop doing it on our own.

That's because Oliva has super high density muscles, and yet that chinese assassin in the Kaioh tournament managed to slightly pierce his abs with his bare hands, yeah, thanks Itagaki.

That is because they're separate publications. There isn't anything in between the series, really. That's just how it is. There was a 2 year gap between the 3rd and 4th series, and they connect with radically different moods. Just go with it; everybody loves the second series the most.

>>139179224
I think Oliva was intended as a callback to Kureha, regarding the "show muscles". He showed the ability to perform insane workout regiments (the helicopter pull), but those muscles/that training didn't help him in the brawn fight against Baki.
>>
>>139179543
>but those muscles/that training didn't help him in the brawn fight against Baki.

Which is still bullshit because unlike Baki Oliva could crumple steel doors like paper and demolish concrete walls like it was nothing, but Baki was wearing plot armor through that entire fight anyway.
I also wonder if he'll ever explain what Oliva meant by him containing his muscles, his explanation was kind of silly back then.

>I also wonder if he'll ever explain what Oliva meant by him containing his muscles, his explanation was kind of silly back then.
Oliva was kind of joking, which was acknowledged. I think it was a weak-handed (read: late) attempt at explaining the fact that none of the fighters have immobile, hyper-massive arms, despite possessing the corresponding level of strength. It's not like Itagaki can be faulted for trying to avoid that question; orators/writers have been doing it since the beginning of "superhuman stories".

Pic related, the most powerful character in the entire series; is familiar with environmental warfare, art of war, dirty fighting, and real fights: Kuriyagawa, the god.

He worked for her as her Albert, really. Since Yuujiro has infinite resources, I doubt she left him any money, she wouldn't have given Baki a penny, so it's most likely she did not have a will. Without a will or relatives/SOs willing to take up the helm, I think he legally but involuntarily became the executor of her estate as a result of being an administer of her estate.
